Clarkson Scores Most Goals in Over 4 Years in 7-2 Win at Brown

Bouncing back impressively from a tough loss on Friday the Clarkson University Hockey team skated to a 7-2 win over Brown in Providence, RI to gain a weekend split on the road in its return to ECAC Hockey action.

The Golden Knights, who fell 2-1 at Yale in their 2017 league opener last night, stand at 11-9-3 overall and are tied for fifth in the ECAC Hockey standings at 6-4-1. For the second straight Saturday night the Knights enjoyed a productive offensive outing and put their most goals on the scoreboard since defeating Princeton by the same score on November 17, 2012. Last week in Lake Placid the Green and Gold defeated RPI 6-1 in non-league action.

Postgame audio Head Coach Casey Jones

Senior Troy Josephs and freshman Nico Sturm led the way with two goals each. Fourteen Knights got on the score sheet and six players posted two-points apiece. Clarkson outshot Brown (3-13-1, 2-8-0) 32-30, including a 24-18 margin through the first 40 minutes. Freshman Jake Kielly finished with 28 saves. The Knights were 1-of-2 on the power play and killed off the Bears' three man-advantage chances to extend their penalty-killing streak 12 straight.

Clarkson took control with a pair of goals just over three minutes apart late in the first. Senior Troy Josephs started things off at 13:45, taking a pass from junior defenseman Terrance Amorosa and firing in a shot from the top of the left circle.

Junior assistant captain Nic Pierog made it 2-0 at 17:06. Pierog followed up a shot by senior A.J. Fossen and knocked in the rebound for his fourth goal of the season. Senior assistant captain Perry D'Arrisso started the scoring play by intercepting a Brown pass in the defensive zone.

Another quick scoring burst to start the second period put the Green and Gold on top 4-0.

Freshman Sheldon Rempal took a drop pass from Amorosa at the top of the right circle and connected at 2:27 for his sixth collegiate goal and first point in seven games. Senior Jordan Boucher also assisted.

Sturm tallied his first of the game 2:30 later, finishing off a strong individual play by freshman Haralds Egle. Sophomore defenseman Aaron Thow also assisted.

Clarkson scored its third goal of the stanza as Sturm stuffed in wraparound at 14:43 for his fifth goal of the year with freshman defenseman Greg Moro and Egle setting up the play which gave the Knights a 5-0 lead through the first 40 minutes.

D'Arrisso made it 6-0 at 7:14 of the third period for his third tally of the season, redirecting in a shot by junior Sam Vigneault. Senior defenseman James de Hass helped to set up the goal.

Just 25 seconds later Brown got on the scoreboard with Tyler Bird's goal.

The Knights came back with a power-play goal at 14:12 with Josephs deflecting a shot by junior defenseman Kelly Summers for his team-high 10th goal of the season. Vigneault also assisted for his second helper of the night.

The Bears scored their second goal with Sam Lafferty finding the back of the net at 16:25.

Clarkson closes out a four-game road trip next weekend in Central NY playing Cornell and Colgate.
