Knights Extend Unbeaten Streak to Five Games with 2-0 Win Over SUNY Canton

Potsdam, NY – In its final non-conference game of the season, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team maintained its momentum going into the home stretch with a 2-0 victory over SUNY Canton on Tuesday evening at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights pushed their unbeaten streak to five straight and improved to 6-2-3 overall, while the Kangaroos dropped to 4-4. Clarkson will hit the road this weekend to face top-10 ranked William Smith on Saturday afternoon.

Though Clarkson enjoyed an overwhelming advantage in both shots and corner kicks in each half, the Knights came away with just a single goal in each of the 45-minute frames. In the first half, the Knights got on the scoreboard in the 21st minute when Camryn Careccia served a pass into the box from down near the end line and the ball was initially denied by Canton goalkeeper Allison Wakefield. However, no Canton player could clear the rebound and the ball bounced around inside among several players from both sides. Eventually, freshman Ally Flaherty ended the scrum in front and was able to sneak the ball over the goal line at 20:34 to give Clarkson a 1-0 advantage.

The second half saw a more aesthetically pleasing score for the Golden Knights. With a little under 15 minutes remaining, sophomore Rachel Strijek served a long ball to the opposite six, finding junior Summer Gillespie. After a quick gather, Gillespie finished off the play for her second score of the season at the 75:08 mark.

Clarkson finished with a 16-3 edge in shots and an 8-1 lead in corner kick opportunities. Elyse Green made three stops for her fifth shutout of the season, while Wakefield was called upon for nine saves for the Roos.
