Late Goal Sends Knights to 1-0 Defeat at RIT

Rochester, NY – With overtime looming, RIT scored with just 26 seconds left in the game to end the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team's season in heartbreaking fashion, 1-0, in the Liberty League First Round playoff game Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their season end with a record of 8-7-3 overall, while RIT improved to 12-3-3. The Tigers advance to the Liberty League semifinals at William Smith this weekend.

Although both teams had some decent shots in the first half, it wasn't until Clarkson's Alicia Bushey got free with 14 minutes to go that there was a real scoring chance, but RIT's Kelly Rogers was up to task with a big save. In the final few minutes of the first half, RIT had some opportunities with a couple of headers up close, but neither came particularly close to the Clarkson frame.

Both teams had chances midway through the second half, but neither could come through with a goal. In the 64th minute, a Clarkson defender fell near the box to give the Tigers a 2-on-1 chance, but after a cross to the middle of the box, Elyse Green was able to make a save on a shot from Emily Thiel. Just two minutes later, Clarkson's Allison Coon was able to get behind the defense after a long pass into the box, but her attempt from the left side was denied by Kelly Rogers in the 67th minute. Six minutes later, RIT again had a good look when Alyssa Tatti shot from 15 yards out, but Green jumped to make a save near the post to maintain her shutout.

Just when it appeared as if the two teams would be heading to overtime and possibly even a shootout, a bit of a broken play halted Clarkson's shutout bid. Clarkson keeper Elyse Green came out to the penalty kick line in an attempt to clear the ball, but she was unable to corral it. Monique Polanco then picked her spot between two Clarkson defenders who were behind Green, and split the two with a groundball into the middle of the net at the 89:34 mark.

RIT finished with a 14-6 lead in shots, producing a 7-3 advantage in each half. The Tigers also concluded the game with an 8-1 edge in corner kick chances. Green stopped six shots for the Golden Knights, while Kelly Rogers made four saves for the Tigers.
