Shea Tosses in Career-Best 29 in Clarkson's Season-Opening Win Over Oswego

Oswego, NY – Senior Madison Shea scored a career-high 29 points as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team opened its season with a win for the fourth year in a row, downing Oswego State 67-52 on Wednesday evening.

The Golden Knights head to Plattsburgh this weekend for a tournament, taking on the University of New England at 8:00 pm on Friday.

The first quarter was all Clarkson, as the Golden Knights forced Oswego into nine turnovers while committing just one themselves. That was enough to allow Clarkson to combat a somewhat slow shooting start (6-for-17), as the Knights gained a 19-9 edge after 10 minutes. However, the Lakers found a bit of a groove on offense and limited their mistakes in the second period, scoring 20 points with no turnovers. Clarkson's woes from the field got worse in the second quarter (4-for-18), allowing the Lakers to pull within two at the break.

The two-point deficit was as close as Oswego would get, however. In the third quarter, the Knights led by just two with a little over seven minutes to go, but a Hannah Earl layup at the 7:14 mark sparked a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to push Clarkson's advantage to 12. On Clarkson's final possession of the third, Molly Stewart buried a 3-pointer from the elbow extended with 26 seconds to push the Knights' advantage to 14 (51-37).

Shea made a 3-pointer in the first few moments of the fourth quarter, stretching the Knights lead to 19 points (56-37). Oswego responded with a 13-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Quincey Zimmerman, which pulled the Lakers within single digits (58-50), but that was as small as the margin would get for Clarkson. Freshman Olivia Marshall hit a jumper in the lane to end Oswego's run and the Knights forced six straight misses by Oswego, giving the Knights an opportunity to push its lead back above double digits.

Shea's career-high 29 points came on 10-for-17 shooting from the floor, including four 3-pointers, and a 5-for-6 effort from the free throw line. The senior guard also filled out the rest of the stat sheet with seven rebounds, five steals and three assists. Sophomore Molly Stewart tied her collegiate-high of 16 points, going 5-for-12 from the field.

For Oswego, Rachael Windhausen had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Courtney Ameele recorded 14 points, but went just 6-for-24 from the field, including a 1-for-12 slump in the second half. Ameele also picked up seven boards, five assists and three blocks.
