Knights Drop 78-63 Decision at RIT

Rochester, NY – Four players finished in double figures for the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team, but RIT shot nearly 60% in the second half to earn a 78-63 Liberty League win over the Golden Knights on Friday night.

The Golden Knights dropped to 11-9 overall and 6-5 in the Liberty League, while RIT gained a key win to improve to 14-7 overall and 7-5 in conference games.  Clarkson takes on Liberty League leader William Smith on Saturday afternoon before returning home for a three-game stretch.

Junior Devin Sorell started off hot, making four of her first five shots, including all four of her 3-point attempts, but still the Golden Knights were down by five after the end of the first quarter. In less than two minutes of the second quarter, Clarkson took the lead with a 7-0 run and pushed their advantage to five after a Molly Stewart layup at the 4:14 mark to make the score 29-24. The Tigers received back-to-back 3-point field goals from Jessica Glaz and Ashlynn Palmitesso and scored eight points in just 64 seconds to reclaim the lead with a little over 90 seconds left in the first half, but a Molly Stewart layup in the waning seconds allowed Clarkson tie the game up at 34-34 at the break.

In the third period the two teams continued to exchange baskets with neither able to gain much of an advantage until late in the quarter. Clarkson had a 46-45 lead near the midway point of the quarter, but the Knights went cold as RIT rattled off seven straight points to take a six-point lead. Though the margin was cut to four at the end of the third, the breather did nothing to slow down RIT's momentum. The Tigers pushed their advantage to 10 points early on, and though Clarkson pulled back to within six on two occasions and trailed by seven with 3:51 remaining, RIT was able to stay hot from the field and Clarkson scored just two more points, falling by double figures.

Sorell finished with a team-high 17 points for the Knights while Madison Shea had a double-double on 13 points and 10 rebounds. Stephanie Grobe added 12 apiece and Molly Stewart contributed nine points, whileClarkson's fifth starter Alyssia Marsal produced a solid all-around effort with eight points, 12 rebounds, five assists and four steals. The Tigers were led by Tara Lynch and Ashlynn Palmitesso, as each player scored 21 points and missed just three shots from the floor. Cori Okada didn't shoot well, but still contributed strongly with 10 points, seven rebounds and 12 assists.
