Mercer Named One of Three Finalist for Patty Kazmaier Award

Cayley Mercer, a senior left wing on the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team, has been named a top-three finalist for the 2017 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, announced today by USA Hockey.

The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, which is in its 20th year, is presented annually to the top player in NCAA Division I women's ice hockey. The prestigious honor will be presented during a brunch ceremony at the Foundry Arts Centre on Saturday, March 18 at 9:30 a.m CT in St. Charles, Missouri. The award ceremony is part of the festivities associated with the NCAA Women's Frozen Four, which will take place at Family Arena in St. Charles, Missouri.

Mercer, a native of Exeter, Ontario, played a leading role in Clarkson winning the ECAC Hockey regular-season title. The Knights, who are ranked third in the national polls, posted a 19-1-2 league record to claim the number one seed in the ECAC Hockey playoffs for the third time in the past four seasons. The Green and Gold, who defeated Rensselaer 2-0 (4-1, 5-2) in the quarterfinal round of the conference playoffs last weekend at Cheel Arena, own a 27-4-5 overall record. Clarkson hosts the ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament this Saturday and Sunday.
 
An offensive threat every time she hits the ice, Mercer is a dynamic player who leads the nation in goals with 25 and is tied for third in points with 55 through 36 games. She earned the ECAC Hockey scoring title with 42 points on 20 goals and 22 assists through 22 league games. Mercer tallied at least one point in 31 games and posted 18 multiple-point outings. She was the league-leader in power-play points (12) and goals (6) and tied for third in conference assists (22). She tied for second in game-winning goals (5) and was third for in shorthanded tallies (2). Mercer has been named ECAC Hockey Player of the Week three times this season and earned conference monthly honors for February.

Clarkson's second all-time leading scorer, Mercer has amassed 77 goals and 94 assists for 171 career points through 155 games.  She is 10 points shy of tying 2014 Patty Kazmaier Award winner Jamie Lee Rattray '14 as the Golden Knights' all-time leading scorer.

Mercer has earned her business undergraduate degree as a distinct member of the Honors Society Beta Alpha Psi and is currently taking a very demanding one year MBA program. She also serves as a GA for the school of business. Mercer is also invloved with community service efforts with Potsdam Elementary School, community clean up, and helped organized the National Girls and Women's in Sport Day clinic.
