CU Men's Lacrosse Preview - vs. Potsdam State (3/21)

One final warm up game is on the schedule before the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team begins conference play, but it will be one of the team's biggest rivals as the Golden Knights take on crosstown competitor Potsdam State on Tuesday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights enter the game with a record of 4-1 overall, having jumped back on the winning track with a 12-4 win over Hartwick College on Saturday. Potsdam, on the other hand, has played just one game so far, suffering a 14-11 loss to Utica a week ago. The Golden Knights are 33-7 all-time against the Bears, but they saw their eight-game winning streak against Potsdam come to an end in 2016 with an 11-9 defeat.

Senior Ryan DaRin racked up five more goals against Hartwick on Saturday, helping him become Clarkson's 27th player in the 100-point club, joining classmate Ryan St. Croix and 25 others who have reached triple digits in the last six decades. DaRin ranks second in the conference in goals per game (3.40) and fifth in points (3.80) thanks to 17 goals and 19 total points. He also leads the league in shots per game at 9.20 attempts per contest. Classmate Ryan St. Croix is third on the team with 13 points on nine goals and four assists as he is creeping towards 100 career goals. Fellow seniors Kyle Brown (8-3-11) and Scott Dosser (3-3-6) have also chipped in on offense, as have underclassmen Conor Bartlett (7-7-14) and Marcus Lavarnway (3-3-6).

In the midfield, freshman Ryan Gabriel has won a little over 60 percent of his faceoffs and leads the team with 14 groundballs. He is closely followed by Marc Simmons (13 groundballs), Mark Uhlig (12 groundballs) and Nate Smart (12 groundballs). Both Simmons and Smart have also caused four turnovers each, trailing only Justin Gibson's nine caused turnovers. In the Clarkson crease, senior Nick Strandholm is off to a solid start, allowing only 7.66 goals per game with a .598 save percentage.

Potsdam went 10-6 last year with a veteran laden squad, but several newcomers performed well in their first games for the Bears. Nick Henrie tallied five points in his collegiate debut with four goals and an assist while Josh Huiatt scooped up six groundballs in his first college game. Still, the Bears will need to lean on some upperclassmen if they hope to create a winning streak against Clarkson. Senior Matt Moran had four points in the season opener, and he produced two goals in last year's win against the Knights. Junior Eric Soderquist also scored four points versus Utica. Junior Marc Leveroni (20-for-28) will do battle at the faceoff 'x' with Clarkson's Gabriel.
