CU Men's Lacrosse Preview - at Union College (4/1)

Less than a week ago the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team sent RIT to its first conference loss in five years. Now, the Golden Knights have the attention of the rest of the Liberty League and will have to be prepared for everyone's best shot, which starts against Union in Schenectady on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. contest

The Golden Knights are 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the Liberty League and the team is now receiving votes in the latest USILA Coaches' Poll. The Dutchmen enter the game with a record of 3-3 overall and are 0-1 in league play. Clarkson has won 14 of the 37 all-time meetings, but since the start of the 2010 season the Knights have won only once in eight games against Union. The Dutchmen won 11-9 in 2016.

Clarkson has consistently won in close situations this year thanks to solid efforts on both offense and defense. Senior Nick Strandholm put in an outstanding effort last week against RIT and was rewarded several times, most significantly as the USILA/BSN Sports Division III North Defensive Player of the Week. For the year, Strandholm has a 7.77 goals against average and a .614 save percentage. Buoying his effort, defenders Justin Gibson, Michael Nourse and Nate Smart have combined for 20 caused turnovers. On offense, Ryan DaRin is second in the conference in scoring with 25 goals en route to a team-best 27 points. Ryan St. Croix (16-4-20) and Conor Bartlett (9-11-20) are tied for second on the team in points, while Kyle Brown (11-3-14) and Scott Dosser (3-8-11) have each contributed good numbers as well. Mark Uhlig and Marc Simmons are tied for the team lead in groundballs (18) while freshman Ryan Gabriel has won 58.9% of his faceoffs.

The Dutchmen have allowed the most goals per game (11.54) in the conference and have committed the most turnovers per game (23.33) in the league, too, but still have a .500 record through six games. Union has a diverse offense with four players having scored at least eight goals, but none more than nine. Peter Richardson sits atop the leaderboard for the Dutchmen with 15 points on nine goals and six assists, while both Daniel Kycia (9-4-13) and Kerry Lyne (9-2-11) match his goal total. Jack Scheufele has also produced nine points with eight goals and an assist and Jordan Cooper has 11 points on four goals and seven assists. Defensively, Josh Willis has 25 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers and Mike Froman has 14 groundballs and seven caused turnovers. Alex Newhouse and Tom Lawton have split time on faceoffs and have virtually identical win percentages (60.0% and 56.0%, respectively). Sam Bebout has a .541 save percentage and 17 groundballs in the Union crease.
