In a specialty-teams battle, Clarkson University came out on top and earned a 4-2 victory over Rensselaer in Game 2 of an ECAC Hockey first-round series at Cheel Arena on Saturday night. The Golden Knights, who won Game 1 of the best-of-three game series 7-4 on Friday, advance in the league playoffs to face off against Cornell in Ithaca, NY next weekend in a quarterfinals series.

Winners of three straight, Clarkson stands at 17-14-5 overall.

The game's first five goals all came on the power play.

Clarkson came through with its second straight three-goal outing on the power play with a 3-of-6 effort with the man-advantage Saturday night. The Knights allowed RPI (8-28-1) to score on two of its first three power-play chances, but the Green and Gold penalty killers came up big against the league's top-rated unit over the final 20 minutes. The Engineers had a pair of man-advantage chances in the third period when Clarkson was holding on to a one-goal lead, but the Knights turned away RPI's bid to tie and sealed the victory with a late empty-net tally.

Senior Troy Josephs (Whitby, ONT) continued his torrid scoring streak with another two-goal effort, along with an assist, to lead the offense. Josephs, who combined for 10 goals through his first three seasons, has now scored six goals over the past three games and has a team-high 19 goals in his final collegiate campaign.

Josephs scored his first of the night early in the first when he gathered in a loose puck at the top of the crease and poked in the game's first goal at 5:51. Defensemen, junior Kelly Summers (Golden Lake, ONT) and senior James de Haas (Mississauga, ONT) set up the power-play tally.

Rensselaer came back with its own man-advantage score at 14:40 with a tip-in in front by Riley Bourbonnais.

With 70 seconds remaining in the opening frame, Josephs connected again, redirecting a shot from the point by Summers. Freshman Haralds Egle (Liepaja, Latvia) also earned an assist.

Midway through the second period, Josephs chipped the puck out from a scrum along the boards to de Haas who was alone in the slot. Clarkson's captain ripped a shot from between the circles for a power-play marker at 11:36 for one of his three points on the night. The Knights' leading scorer from the blueline, de Haas has at least one point in the last six games, including 10 (2-8) in the last three. He has 28 points (7-21) on the year.

RPI made it a one-goal game going into the second intermission with a tip-in score while on the power play with Bourbonnais netting his second of the night.

Clarkson out shot RPI 36-27, but the Engineers held a 10-8 advantage in the third. The Knights, behind their penalty kill, held off the visitors and sealed the playoff-series clinching win with an empty-net goal by junior assistant captain Nic Pierog (Georgetown, ONT) with 18.7 seconds remaining. de Haas cleared the puck out of the Clarkson zone to earn an assist.

Freshman Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) made 25 saves.
