Clarkson Defense Strong in 10-6 Win Over Oswego State

Oswego, NY – Senior Ashley Flick scored a season-high five points including the first and final goals for the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team as the Golden Knights downed Oswego State 10-6 in non-league action Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Lakers fell in their season opener. Clarkson will continue on its non-league run against Utica College on Saturday.

Though Clarkson's offense was able to score 10 times on Tuesday, it was the Golden Knights' ball possession and defense that provided the early edge. Flick, Kate Dillon, Christina Pollard and Lexi Smith all scored for Clarkson in the first 10 minutes, a stretch in which the Lakers were held without a single shot. Oswego finally did tally at the 19:39 mark of the first half, but the Knights received goals from Dillon and Jaid Baytos, both on free-position shots, to extend their lead to 6-1. Oswego picked up one more goal before the half, but the Knights had a comfortable lead at the break, having scored three free-position goals and a player-up goal.

Just like the first half, the Knights kept Oswego's in check for close to 10 minutes to start the second period. Clarkson scored on another free-position shot at 22:52, and the Lakers didn't take a shot for well over nine minutes to start the half. However, the Lakers did find a bit of an offensive groove after their first goal of the second half, scoring three straight to make the score 7-5 with 17 minutes remaining. The 9:40 scoreless drought for Clarkson was halted by Ashley Flick at the 13:12 mark, and the senior's score started a three-goal run for the Knights that all but finished off the Lakers with just under 10 minutes to go.

Clarkson finished with an 18-13 edge in shots, but a 10-1 advantage in free-position shots. The team also won 12 of the 15 draws in the game.

Flick finished with five points on three goals and two assists, while both Baytos and Dillon scored twice. Abby Collins, Christina Pollard, Lexi Smith and Taylor Collins also each added a point in the game, with the latter also scooping up six groundballs. Stephanie Scaia caused three turnovers and added five groundballs as well. Samantha Gladd produced a .500 save percentage with six saves in the game.

For Oswego, Teresa Shattuk scored five points with one goal and four assists and Montana Garrett added three goals. Angela Ponto made six saves for the Lakers.
