Bridge Near Perfect in Knights' Sweep of Union

Schenectady, NY – Senior Jamie Bridge was perfect through six innings in the opener and Katie Pelton got a two-out save in game two as the Clarkson University Softball team swept a doubleheader against Union College, 6-1 and 8-4, Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 15-11 overall and 5-1 in the Liberty League, while Union dropped to 4-14 and 0-4. Clarkson plays a non-league doubleheader against Plattsburgh State at home on Wednesday and then gets back to league action on the weekend at St. Lawrence.

The story of game one was Jamie Bridge, as the senior righty plated a pair of runs and was dominant in the circle. Bridge was perfect through six innings, striking out 13 of the first 18 hitters she faced. Union strung together three hits in the seventh to finally break through, but by that point the Knights had a comfortable lead and cruised to the win.

Clarkson started off with a run in the first as Raeanna Dunn delivered a one-out double and then came home on Bridge's single through the left side. Both teams were quiet on offense for the next few innings until the Knights tacked on two more in the fourth. Ali Schwenzfeier and Liz Caggiano each singled and the runners moved up on a wild pitch, setting up a two-run single by freshman Danielle Whitham. In the fifth, Dunn again came around on a single from Bridge and Whitham again delivered a two-run single to make the score 6-0. Bridge needed just three more outs for her second collegiate perfect game, but she gave up a leadoff single in the seventh, and two of the next three hitters added singles to also end her shutout bid. Bridge finally induced a pop up to end the game with her ninth win of the season.

Dunn, Bridge, Whitham, and Kyrstin Messier each had two hits in the game, with Whitham recording four runs batted in as well. Bridge gained her sixth complete game of the year, whiffing 13 in seven innings and allowing a single earned run on three hits.

In the second game, Clarkson jumped out to an early lead in the second by scoring three and then added three more in the third. Ali Schwenzfeier walked and moved up on a sacrifice bunt before Bridget Woolley singled up the middle for a 1-0 Clarkson lead. Kyrstin Messier followed with an RBI double and then Summer Lancette singled through the left side for a 3-0 advantage. In the third, Michele Winn scored on a wild pitch and then the bottom of the lineup did some damage as Maggie Stark singled home Schwenzfeier and Stark rounded the bases thanks to a Bridget Woolley single. Union got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth with run scoring hits from Kara Brown and Courtney Casey to cut the lead in half, but the Knights responded with two more in the top of the sixth on a two-run double from Lancette. Kim Puzo homered in the bottom half of the sixth to make the score 8-4, and Union threatened again in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with just one out. Senior Katie Pelton was brought on to relieve in the difficult situation, but induced a groundout  and a flyout to end the game.

Woolley reached base three times with two hits and a walk in the second game while Kyrstin Messier, Raeanna Dunn and Summer Lancette each added two hits. Maggie Stark earned the win with a solid 4.1 innings of work and Pelton picked up her first save of the year by getting out of the seventh inning jam.
