Clarkson Men's Hockey Announces Season-Ending Awards

The 2016-17 Clarkson University Hockey team was recognized at the annual Knight Club Hockey Awards Banquet on Saturday, April 22. Family, friends, and booster club members paid tribute to the Golden Knights and honored the seven seniors in the Class of 2017.

The Golden Knights' Class of 2017 – Jordan Boucher, Perry D'ArrissoJames de HaasA.J. FossenTroy JosephsSteve Perry and Ville Runola - helped Clarkson compile 71 victories, skated to three winning seasons during their four-year careers and played in four consecutive ECAC Hockey playoff series at Cheel Arena, winning three postseason match-ups before the home crowd.

Ten awards were recognized at the banquet. Headlining the list of recipients was Sam Vigneault, who was named the recipient of the Bill Harrison Clarkson Most Valuable Player in honor of the successful Clarkson coach of the late 1940s and 1950s. A junior forward, Vigneault led the Golden Knights in scoring for the second consecutive season. The Baie–Comeau, QUE native had the most productive offensive campaign by a Clarkson player in five years with 36 points on 12 goals and 24 assists (the most helpers in a single season for the program in nine years) along with posting a +9 plus/minus rating through 39 games. A Third-Team ECAC Hockey All-Star, Vigneault, who tallied 75 career points (30-45) over 106 collegiate games, signed a pro contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets' organization after the conclusion of the Knights' season in mid-March.

For the second straight year, D'Arrisso was honored with the Mike Morrison Dedication Award for teamwork, hustle and dedication. The award was named in honor of the former Clarkson captain who died in a work accident on July 27, 1988. A senior forward from Mississauga, ONT, D'Arrisso served as an assistant captain this season. One of the hardest workers on the team, D'Arrisso proved to be a strong two-way forward for the Green and Gold. He skated in 36 games this season, recording four goals and six assists along with posting one of the best plus/minus rating on the team at +9. He played big minutes on the Knights' shorthanded unit, helping Clarkson post one of the best penalty-killing pct. in the league the past four years. D'Arrisso completed his collegiate career with 11 goals and 15 assists in 119 games. D'Arrisso signed an ATO with Elmira in the East Coast Hockey League on March 24

Terrance Amorosa was the recipient of the Clarkson Ironman Award, presented to the team member who most demonstrated the will and determination to overcome his injuries and contribute to the team. A native of Kirkland, QUE, the junior defenseman battled through injury to make a substantial contribution to the Knights' success this winter. Amorosa, a Philadelphia Flyers draft choice, skated in 30 games, recording 16 points on three goals and 13 assists along with posting a team-high +12 plus/minus rating.
 
Josephs was presented with the Richmond Award. Named in honor of loyal Clarkson followers Ernie and Connie Richmond, the Richmond award is presented to a Golden Knight who has shown improvement in his playing ability and displayed team leadership. A senior forward, Josephs was Clarkson's leading goal scorer with 20 tallies, the most by a Golden Knight in seven years. The Whitby, ONT native also recorded 13 assists to finish with 33 points in 37 games, just one point shy of equaling his combined total through his first three seasons at Clarkson. Josephs led the Green and Gold in power-play markers (7) and game-winning goals (5) along with posting a +10 plus/minus rating. Josephs, who signed a pro contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins organization after the completion of his senior season, totaled 67 points on 30 goals and 37 assists through a 134 career games as a Golden Knight.

Nic Pierog was honored with the Fran Neragin Award. Named in honor of the loyal Clarkson hockey booster who passed away in 1984, the Neragin award is presented to a player who displays unselfish play and sportsmanship both on and off the ice. An assistant captain, Pierog, a junior forward from Georgetown, ONT, skated in 39 games with seven goals and four assists. Pierog played the leading role in Clarkson Hockey supporting the Headway Foundation Concussion Awareness Weekend.

Jake Kielly was selected as the Knights' Rookie of the Year. The native of Eden Prairie, MN started in goal for 35 of Clarkson's 39 games, including 28 of the last 29. He posted a .911 save percentage and a 2.56 goals-against average with three shutouts and 16 wins, the most victories by a Clarkson freshman goaltender in 18 years. Named to ECAC Hockey's All-Rookie team, Kielly was also a finalist for the conference's Goaltender of the year Award.

Junior Brett Gervais, a native of Corona, CA, was named Clarkson's Best Defensive Player. An assistant captain, Gervais is a versatile center who did all the little thing to help the Knights win. He skated in all 39 games, recording six goals and five assists. Gervais regularly skated against the opponent's top line, played on the power play, killed penalties and was one of the Green and Gold's best players on face offs.
 
de Haas was named the recipient of the Paul J. Pilon Award, presented, when appropriate, to the senior who has excelled both as a student and hockey player. Paul J. Pilon was an outstanding player on the 1936-37 Clarkson hockey team. In November of 1937, Paul was killed in a car accident. A three-year leader for the Green and Gold, including serving as team captain this season, de Haas was a mainstay on the Clarkson blueline. A 2012 NHL Draft choice of the Detroit Red Wings, he led the Clarkson defensemen in scoring in each of the past three seasons. de Haas recorded the most points by a Clarkson blueliner in 14 years this past winter, posting 29 points on seven goals and 22 assists in 37 games. Through 149 career games, the Mississauga, ONT native recorded 74 points (24-50). A three-time ECAC Hockey All-Star, de Haas was selected the conference's Best Defensive-Defenseman (only the fourth Golden Knight to ever receive the honor) and as a Second-Team league All-Star this season. He is a Finance major. 
 
Runola was honored as Clarkson's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. An exceptional student-athlete who competed at a high level for the Golden Knights while studying in the University's rigorous curriculum of Computer Science, the four-year veteran goaltender compiled a 3.89 grade point average. The Raisio, Finland native earned Clarkson Hockey's Junior Academic Achievement Award last season and is a three-time selection to ECAC Hockey's All-Academic team. Runola posted a .881 save percentage, a 3.14 goals against average and three wins at Clarkson.
