CU Women's Lacrosse Preview - vs. Vassar/Bard (4/28-29)

Even with two wins this weekend at Vassar and Bard, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team will need help to get into the Liberty League playoffs. Regardless, the Golden Knights will be putting forth their best effort to close out the 2017 regular season.

The Green and Gold enter the weekend with a record of 9-6 overall and 2-5 in the Liberty League, while Vassar is 6-7 and 3-4 and also playing for a potential playoff spot. Saturday's opponent, Bard College, is 4-8 overall and 0-7 in conference play.

The Golden Knights are just 5-12 all-time against Vassar, but they have won three of the last five meetings, including a 13-9 decision in 2016. Versus Bard, Clarkson is 5-0, having outscored the Raptors 94-26 overall, capping that run off with a 21-0 win in 2016.

Clarkson's offense was both strong and questionable this past weekend, tossing up double digits against Union on Friday before going cold against the Dutchwomen in a 15-13 loss. Clarkson scored twice in the first few minutes against eighth-ranked William Smith, but the Herons' defense allowed only two more goals in the final 58-plus minutes. Sophomore Jaid Baytos leads the team in scoring with 53 points, recording 39 goals and 14 assists to go along with 16 groundballs, 14 draws, and 11 caused turnovers. Senior Kate Dillon trails only Baytos on the scoring chart, with 43 points on 35 goals and eight assists. Also chipping in on offense are freshmen Abby Collins (23-5-28) and Katie Sergeant (24-2-26) and junior Taylor Collins (16-9-25). Sergeant has 23 draw controls, while the Collins sisters have produced in all aspects, with Abby recording 24 groundballs, 18 caused turnovers and 14 draws and Taylor contributing 42 groundballs, 23 caused turnovers and 39 draws, with each figure leading the squad. Stephanie Scaia and Amanda Ellman have each caused 15 turnovers and Samantha Gladd has an 8.78 goals against average with a .419 save percentage.

Vassar has no go-to scorer as several players have simply produced steady numbers all season. Tessa Waters leads the team with 33 points on 25 goals and eight assists (as well as 23 groundballs and 30 draw controls), while Kelly Pushie and Storm Sideleau have each tossed in 24 goals with five and four assists, respectively. Julia Trudell adds in 22 points on 17 goals and five assists and Fiona MacLeod has 19 points thanks to 11 goals and eight assists, as well as 11 caused turnovers. Emily Chancey has a .523 save percentage with 113 saves and a 10.55 goals against average.

Though Bard has four wins in 12 contests this year, the Raptors have struggled mightily in conference games this year with just 15 goals scored and 115 allowed. Melissa Rosenthal is the team's top performer with 29 points on 16 goals and 13 assists to go along with 34 groundballs, 25 draws and 16 caused turnovers. Caleigh DeCaprio contributes 28 points on 22 goals and six assists and Nicole Ellin has 19 points, 25 groundballs and 35 draws. Dylan McDonald also has recorded 14 points, 30 groundballs, 13 caused turnovers and 15 draws. Kaylynn Tran possesses a 13.36 goals against average and a .441 save percentage with 127 saves in 2017.
