Knights Drop 14-13 Decision at Vassar

Poughkeepsie, NY – After fighting back from an early deficit to take the lead at the half, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team succumbed to a second run in the early moments of the latter period and dropped a 14-13 decision at Vassar College on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 9-7 overall and to 2-6 in the Liberty League, while Vassar evened its record at 7-7 and 4-4 in conference games. With the loss, the Knights were officially eliminated from Liberty League postseason contention. Clarkson will close out the regular season against Bard on Saturday afternoon.

Vassar came out hot, scoring three times in the first five minutes and extending its lead to four by the 17:17 mark. The Golden Knights finally broke through on their seventh shot of the game when Emma Andrews found Katie Sergeant in front to cut into the Brewers' lead. That began a streak of three straight goals by the Knights, and that run was only shortly halted by a Vassar goal at 8:41, as Jaid Baytos, Taylor Collins and Abby Collins each scored unassisted goals in the final 5:35 to take a 6-5 lead.

Kate Dillon tacked on another Clarkson goal at the start of the second period, tallying at the 27:10 mark for a 7-5 Knights' lead, but Vassar put forth a burst of three goals in a stretch of just 25 seconds to recapture the advantage. The Brewers scored two more goals for a 5-0 run and a 10-7 lead and that advantage would be maintained for the rest of the game.

Jaid Baytos scored three goals while both Taylor Collins and Kate Dillon chipped in three points on two goals and one assist each. Abby Collins and Ashley Flick also scored twice for the Knights, while Stephanie Scaia produced two groundballs, three draws and a caused turnover. Taylor Collins also had six draw controls and Samantha Gladd made seven saves in the Clarkson crease.

For Vassar, Julia Trudell scored five times and Fiona MacLeod produced four points on two goals and two assists, also adding in three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Kelly Pushie also had four points, recording a goal and three assists, while Tessa Waters scored three times, caused a pair of turnovers and gained four draws. Emily Chancey stopped six shots between the pipes for Vassar.
