Clarkson Shuts Out Skidmore in Doubleheader

Four pitchers combined for 14 scoreless innings as the Clarkson University Baseball team swept a doubleheader at Skidmore on Wednesday afternoon.

In the first game, Clarkson threw its first shutout of the season, blanking Skidmore by the score of 8-0.

The two teams struggled offensively in the first three innings as Clarkson only had two hits and Skidmore had three at that point. Clarkson's offense got some momentum going in the fourth inning finally. Dom Pirro worked a full count one-out walk and then Chris Miller followed him by beating out a bunt single. Cam Bando's ground ball saw Miller get erased at second base by a fielder's choice, but it did leave runners on the corners. Joe Fraser then came through with the clutch hit as his single down the right field line scored Pirro for the first run of the game.

Clarkson got some breathing room in fifth on one swing of the bat. Joe Stockman started the inning with a walk, but the next two Clarkson batters were retired. Once again though a Golden Knight came through with a two out hit, with Brad Pearson stepping up this time. Pearson launched a 2-2 pitch over the right field fence for his first home run of the season, making the score 3-0.

The Green and Gold put the game to rest with a five run sixth inning. Miller and Bando jumpstarted the rally with back-to-back singles. Fraser was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then Ben Knauf watched four balls go by to work a walk and plate Miller. Stockman's ground ball saw Bando get thrown out at home plate, but a Skidmore error let Fraser come around to score, with Stockman and Knauf moving to second and third. Knauf then scampered home on a wild pitch before Mike Messier worked a walk. After Stockman and Messier moved up on another wild pitch, Nate Burns' single to right field scored Stockman and placed runners on the corners. Pearson could only ground out in the next at-bat, but it was good enough to score Messier for the final run of the game.

Ted Wilson got the start on the mound for Clarkson and he earned his third victory of the season. Wilson allowed only four hits in five innings and struck out two batters. Ryan Riley pitched the final two frames and only a Clarkson error prevented Riley from facing the minimum six Skidmore batters.

For the second straight game, the Clarkson pitchers kept Skidmore off the scoreboard as the Golden Knights swept the doubleheader with a 2-0 win.

In a game where there were only eight hits and one walk, runs were at a premium. Neither team had a hit in the first two innings and then when each did get a single in the third, bad baserunning prevented either team from capitalizing. Messier got the first hit of the game for Clarkson when he singled to center field, but he was caught stealing second base. For Skidmore, Ryan Strickland singled to center field with two outs in the third. The Thoroughbreds looked like they were going to start a rally when Steven Gilbert followed Strickland with a single to right field, but Clarkson right fielder Knauf came up firing and was able to throw out Strickland as he tired to go from second to third.

The next hit came in the fifth and it broke the tie. With one out in the inning, Fraser drove the first pitch he saw over the right field fence for his first collegiate home run. The margin stayed at one run until the top of the seventh. Pirro opened the inning with a single back up the middle to give Clarkson a baserunner. Pirro moved up on a Miller sacrifice bunt, and then again on a Fraser fly ball. With two outs and two strikes, Knauf was able to smack a hit into center field to bring Pirro home and give Clarkson an insurance run.

The Green and Gold did not need that insurance run thanks to the pitching performances of Mike Bubniak and Burns. Bubniak got his second win of the week after he threw six shutout innings. Bubniak allowed just two hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Burns relieved Bubniak in the seventh inning and allowed one hit, but zero runs to preserve the win and get his second save of the year.

Clarkson is now 7-7 on the season with a 4-2 record in the Liberty League. Skidmore on the other hand, is 6-8 overall and 1-5 in conference. Clarkson has now won 10 straight games against the Thoroughbreds.

Clarkson will be on the road once again this weekend as the Golden Knights head to Rensselaer for a four game set starting on Saturday afternoon.
