CU Women's Lacrosse Preview - vs. Skidmore/RPI (4/7-8)

Winners of seven straight, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team plays four of its next six conference games at home, beginning this weekend with contests against Skidmore College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The Golden Knights enter the weekend at 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the Liberty League after gaining an overtime win over St. Lawrence last Saturday. Though no team has played more than two games in conference action yet, only three remain unbeaten, and that won't be the case after Friday as Clarkson's first opponent is Skidmore College (6-2, 2-0). Even if Clarkson survives that game, it still will have to get through Rensselaer (3-5, 1-1) on Saturday.

Clarkson lost out on a playoff spot last year in a tie-breaking scenario against the Thoroughbreds when Skidmore beat the Golden Knights 14-4 late in the campaign. The Green and Gold defeated Rensselaer 9-2 but it was their first win against the Engineers since 1991.

The Golden Knights have the highest scoring offense in the league at 14 goals per game thanks to a well-rounded approach. Sophomore Jaid Baytos leads the team with 36 points on 25 goals and 11 assists, while senior Kate Dillon is tied for the team-lead in goals with 25 (25-4-29). Junior Taylor Collins has continued to produce all over the field with 18 points (12 goals, 6 assists), 22 groundballs, 22 draw controls, and 10 caused turnovers. Several first-year collegians have made impressive impacts on the Knights' success as well. Katie Sergeant ranks third on the team in goals and points (21-1-22) while Emma Andrews is second on the squad in assists (7-7-14). Like her older sister, Abby Collins contributes in all aspects with 13 points (10-3-13), 14 groundballs, 10 draw controls, and a team-high of 11 caused turnovers. Stephanie Scaia also has played well on the defensive end with 14 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers. Sophomore Samantha Gladd has a 7.75 goals against average with a .422 save percentage and 20 groundballs this year.

Skidmore ranks third in the conference in scoring, averaging 11.44 goals per game. Nearly half of that output (39 out of 103) comes from Cas Szwajkowski, who leads the conference in goals per game (4.33), points per game (4.67) and shots per game (8.78), taking two more shots per contest than any other player in the league. She is aided by Tyler Phillips (15-5-20) and Natalie LaBeau (9-12-21), with Phillips also contributing 19 draws, 15 groundballs and eight caused turnovers. Rachael Talanian is an outstanding defender, causing 24 turnovers and picking up 41 groundballs, while Gianna Muscari also has pestered opponents into committing 17 turnovers. Megan Kolopsky has a 9.44 goals against average and a .444 save percentage.

Rensselaer has not matched the offensive production of either Clarkson or Skidmore, but has been moderately successful on defense. The Engineers are allowing 9.63 goals per game, but haven't matched that on offense with just 7.00 goals per game, though both numbers are skewed thanks to a 17-3 loss to top-ranked Middlebury in mid-March. Aleena Milinski has a 9.19 goals against average and a .409 save percentage, while Maddy Alsanian leads the team with 16 groundballs. On offense, Sophie Hager boasts 24 points (18-6-24). Both Allie Claroni and Abbey Salvon have lines of 8-1-9 through eight contests.
