Top 10 Clarkson Highlights - #5 Men's Hockey Class of 2020 Shines at Shillelagh Tournament

The Top 10 Clarkson University Athletic Department Highlights of 2016-17 were carefully selected by the Clarkson Sports Information Staff. Top 10 Clarkson highlights will be posted on Mondays throughout the summer.

At the conclusion of the 2016-17 season, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team saw its top four scorers leave for the professional ranks. Junior Sam Vigneault (36 points), Troy Josephs (33), James de Haas (29) and Jordan Boucher (26) combined for 49 goals, 75 assists and 124 points in their final season with the Golden Knights, and such a loss of offensive firepower would usually have a coach hanging his head and ready to rebuild.

That isn't' the case for Clarkson head coach Casey Jones.

While 124 points could be tough to replace, Jones and the rest of the coaching staff, as well as the Golden Knights' faithful, can dream big on the Class of 2020, especially after their introduction to the collegiate game in 2016-17. Freshmen forwards Sheldon Rempal, Nico Sturm, Devin Brosseau, and Haralds Egle ranked fifth through eighth on the Clarkson scoring chart, with all but Egle accumulating 20 points or more. Freshman defenseman Greg Moro also logged 38 games and scored 10 points, while Jake Kielly posted a 2.56 goals against average and three shutouts in nearly 2100 minutes of action in the Clarkson crease.

One of those shutouts by Kielly came near the midseason point when Clarkson upended 12th-ranked Notre Dame, a team that ended the campaign ranked fifth in the final poll, in the championship game of the Shillelagh Tournament which was hosted by the Fighting Irish in South Bend, Indiana. Kielly denied 35 shots in the 2-0 victory over the Fighting Irish, as Clarkson claimed its first in-season tournament title since 2006, largely on the backs of its freshman class. Kielly made 27 saves in a 2-2 tie versus Yale (Clarkson advanced following a shootout) and totaled 62 in the tournament en route to Most Outstanding Player honors. Kielly was joined by Rempal on the All-Tournament team, as the forward from Calgary scored a goal in both games of the tournament. Brosseau, scored what proved to be the game-winner against Notre Dame.

Overall, the freshman class performed all season long. Brosseau was picked as the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month in October, and Kielly earned the same honor in November. Kielly and Rempal each were named to the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie team at the end of the year, while both Egle and Moro earned multiple weekly ECAC Hockey Honor Roll nods during the campaign. Shane Kuzmeski and Jordan Schneider also made contributions on the Clarkson blueline. Kuzemeski played in 21 games, including 16 of the final 17 contests. Skating in 15 games. Schneider tallied one goal and one assist.

With such an array of young talent returning for the Golden Knights in the fall of 2017, few coaches in ECAC Hockey will be shedding any tears for Casey Jones.
