Golden Knights Battle To 2-2 Draw At SUNY Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Each time SUNY Potsdam scored to take the lead, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team responded just a few minutes later, as the Golden Knights stretched their unbeaten streak to three games with a 2-2 tie against rival Potsdam.

The Golden Knights moved to 2-1-2 on the season and will be back in action this weekend at Hantz Turf Field when they take on Oswego State (Friday) and Utica College (Saturday).

The pace between the two teams was frenetic as each had plenty of shots and scoring chances with solid runs each way. Potsdam was the first to capitalize, doing so in the 16th minute of play. From about 20 yards out, just outside the top of the penalty area, Rylie Murray lofted a hard shot into the top corner, just above the outstretched right hand of Clarkson keeper Elyse Green. Clarkson responded a little over seven minutes later when Ashley Abel lofted a pass over the top of the Bears defense to find Summer Gillespie. From there, the junior forward outmaneuvered a pair of Potsdam defenders as well as Bears' goalkeeper Delphine Leonard, hitting a groundball into the opposite corner to make the score 1-1.

The second half was more of the same, as the Bears put pressure on the Clarkson defense in the early going for a few solid chances. At the midway point of the second half, the Bears had several forwards in position to challenge Elyse Green, but it was Brooke Falsion who won the scrum among her teammates and a few Clarkson defenders, knocking in a shot at the 63:23 mark. However, for the second time in the game, Clarkson was able to get the equalizer shortly thereafter. At the 67:09 mark, less than four minutes later, senior Courtney Black nailed a 20-plus yard thronker into the top corner to once again knot the game up.

The teams had some chances down the stretch, with Green making a solid save and also getting some help from one of the goalposts, but it was in the waning seconds of the second overtime that Clarkson nearly came away with the win. Black was in front with a decent look with just 16 seconds left, but her shot went wide and the game concluded in a 2-2 tie.

Much like the score, most of the stats were even between the two teams. Potsdam held a narrow 14-13 edge in shots and each team recorded six corner kicks. Green finished with five saves and Delphine Leonard also had five saves.
