Careccia Scores Twice In Knights' Season-Opening Win

Potsdam, NY - Sophomore Camryn Careccia scored a pair of goals, with one coming in each half, as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team picked up a 3-1 win over Salve Regina in the first game of the North Country Classic on Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights opened their season with a win for the ninth straight season and will face SUNY Geneseo on Saturday afternoon. Salve Regina will face St. Lawrence on Saturday to close out their weekend at the North Country Classic.

Clarkson dominated the first half with a 9-0 shot advantage and a 6-0 edge in corner kicks, holding the Salve Regina offense quiet for the first 45 minutes. The Knights made sure that the dominance showed up on the scoreboard as they tallied twice in the first half. The first score came in the 20th minutes when a thru ball found its way to the feet of Camryn Careccia. After a couple touches to settle, Careccia was able to hit a shot to the nearside post from about 10 yards out to give Clarkson a 1-0 edge. Nineteen minutes later, the Knights' constant pressured worked in their favor, as Madison Kather was able to get in the way of an attempted clear and deflected the ball into the net at the 38:01 mark.

Salve Regina came out with renewed effort in the second half and immediately started bringing the fight back to Clarkson. At the 52:44 mark, the Seahawks ended their scoreless drought when Abby McMackin sent a pass from the side to Cara Cote, who was able to push her shot past a diving Elyse Green to cut Clarkson's lead to one.

The Seahawks continued to put pressure on Clarkson, but the Knights found an extra wind as well and matched the energy. A foul in the box at the midway point in the half gave Clarkson a penalty kick opportunity. At the 22:11 mark, Camryn Careccia had an attempt on the Salve Regina frame, but Carly Pala sprawled to her right to make the save. However, Careccia matched the effort by following her shot and scoring to the far post just four seconds later for a 3-1 Clarkson advantage.

Clarkson finished the game with a 22-7 edge in shots and a 9-3 lead in corner kicks. Elyse Green made three saves in the win for the Knights, while Carly Pala made 12 saves in 82-plus minutes for the Seahawks. Morgan McBrier relieved Pala for seven minutes in the second half while Pala was out with an injury, but she was not called on to make a save.
