Senior Guards Lead Golden Knights in 69-46 Victory Over Bard

Potsdam, NY – Senior guards Madison Shea and Devin Sorell combined for 39 points as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team opened up the weekend with a 69-46 Liberty League victory over Bard Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights climbed a game closer to .500 and improved to 8-9 overall and 3-7 in the Liberty League, while Bard remained winless at 0-10 in conference games and 0-16 overall. Clarkson will end its seven-game home stand versus Vassar on Saturday afternoon and the Raptors will face St. Lawrence.

Clarkson was a little careless on offense, turning the ball over 18 times, but the Knights were able to overcome the deficiency thanks to 17-6 second quarter that spread a small margin to double figures. Clarkson shot 8-for-13 in the second period and was just 17-for-46 in the other three quarters combined.

In recent games against the Raptors, Clarkson has buckled down on defense and not allowed Bard to get going on offense in the first quarter. The previous three contests have seen the Knights roll out to an average lead of 18.7 points after only 10 minutes. However, the Raptors took a quick shot and trailed by nine midway through the period, but unlike the last three games where they were buried quickly, Bard stuck around thanks to two late baskets from Elena LeFevre. Clarkson led by just seven after 10 minutes as the Raptors scored nearly as many points (11) in the first quarter as they had in their three previous first quarters (14) against Clarkson.

However, the Golden Knights quickly changed the game in the second quarter when Madison Shea converted inside on four out of five Clarkson possessions, allowing the Knights to more than double up the Raptors (28-13) just three minutes into the period. Although the offense would quiet down for a bit, Raeanna Dunn made sure that the Knights held a commanding lead at the break when she nailed a 3-pointer from the corner with just a handful of ticks remaining on the clock.

Bard outscored the Knights in the third period (20-17) as both teams headed to the free throw line with regularity, combining for 23 in shots in the quarter. The margin was still a comfortable 15 points at the end of three quarters, but the Knights made sure that Bard would make no comeback. Devin Sorell scored the first five points of the period and Shea added another basket on a fastbreak layup to put the Knights up by 22 with barely 90 seconds expired from the clock. Though the Raptors reduced the deficit to the high teens on a few occasions, Clarkson for the most part just cruised in the final eight minutes to gain a much needed win.

Shea finished with 21 points, her second 20-point game of the season and first since the season-opener, and Sorell added 18 points. Olivia Marshall also recorded eight points and six rebounds for the Knights. For Bard, Elena LeFevre had a team-best 19 points and Caleigh DeCaprio tossed in 13 points, but required 21 shots from the field to do so.
