Knights Punch Ticket for Liberty League Tournament with Four-Set Win Over Skidmore

Potsdam, NY – Kate Isaksen was never busier in the back row than Saturday afternoon for the Clarkson University Volleyball team as the junior libero set a career-high with 51 digs in just four sets as the Golden Knights claimed a four-set win over Skidmore College (18-25, 25-9, 28-26, 25-18) to earn the final playoff berth in the Liberty League Tournament.

The Golden Knights improved to 13-9 overall and 4-3 in the Liberty League, while Skidmore dropped to 17-10 and 3-4. Entering the match, whichever team came away with the win would gain the final playoff spot in the conference tournament. Clarkson will close out its regular season with four non-league matches, including a Tuesday tilt against crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam.

Clarkson's offense struggled in the first set, barely hitting positive in the set with just one more kill than errors committed. Skidmore took advantage, turning a small two-point lead into a seven-point advantage on four attack errors and a setting error. The Knights were down 10 in the first set (24-14) before producing a modest rally, but still lost by seven in the opener.

As nothing went right in the first, virtually nothing went wrong in the second set. Clarkson led 6-3 early and a Savannah Peters kill gave the Knights the serve. Kate Isaksen took it from there, serving six more points to put the Knights up 13-3. Although Skidmore cut the margin back to six (14-8), Clarkson cruised down the stretch by winning 11 of the final 12 points for an overwhelming third set win.

The third game went back and forth with Skidmore turning a three-point deficit (11-8) into a two-point lead (13-11) with a five-point run. Momentum appeared to be on Clarkson's side just a few moments later when the Knights came from two down (17-15) and pushed out to a five-point lead (23-18). Skidmore wouldn't go away, though, tying the set up at 24-24 and forcing several set points. A surprise dump kill by Haley Aud gave the Knights a 27-26 lead and an ace from Amanda Collins gave the Knights the swing game.

Skidmore again led at the midway points (14-11), but the two teams traded small runs over the next 10 points and the Thoroughbreds lost the lead and then regained it at 17-16. That was the last streak that Skidmore had in them, however, as Rachel Reusch produced a pair of kills and combined with Savannah Peters on a block assist to put the Knights up five (22-17). Skidmore stopped the run with a kill from Caite Canfield, but Kendall Cheval scored a kill, combined with Reusch on a block, and then ended the set with another crosscourt kill.

Isaksen's 51 digs were not only a career-high, but they are the most by any player in Division III this year during four-set matches, and the second most overall. She produced 16 digs in the third set alone and had more than half (51 of 98) of Clarkson's digs in the match. Rachel Reusch led the offense with 16 kills and also added four blocks while Maddie Bredehoeft had a double-double on 12 kills and 11 digs and Kendall Cheval nearly matched that performance with 10 kills and 9 digs, as well as 3 aces. Haley Aud ran the team's offense with 45 assists.

For Skidmore, Katy Ehnstrom enjoyed an outstanding match, hitting .441 with 16 kills against just one error in 34 attempts. Allie Dillon and Sophia Hettler tied for the team lead with 23 digs and Caite Canfield added 19 digs. Lauren Wolters and Lily Fitzgerald split setting duties with 16 and 14 assists, respectively.
