Knights Split On Day Two of Frostburg Tournament

Frostburg, MD – Perhaps tired from its lengthy bus ride and five-set come-from-behind win the night before, the Clarkson University Volleyball team struggled on offense on Saturday, yet the Golden Knights were still able to come away with a split at the Frostburg Tournament.

The Golden Knights gained a four-set win over Salisbury (25-16, 25-21, 12-25, 25-23) but did not have enough in the tank to defeat Frostburg State, falling to the hosts in four sets (25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23). Clarkson concludes the regular season with a record of 16-10 overall and will head to Ithaca next weekend to compete in the Liberty League Championship Tournament.

In the first match of the day, Clarkson hit .096 overall, but that was still better than Salisbury's .058 success rate. Rachel Reusch ended up with 14 kills and three block assists and Gillian Kurtic scored seven kills on just 14 swings. The defense was busy, as usual, with Kate Isaksen recording 32 digs and Kendall Cheval and Meghan Edmund chipping in 12 and 11 digs, respectively. Amanda Collins also gained 32 assists. For Salisbury, Nicole Venturelli scored 12 kills but did the Sea Gulls no favors with 15 hitting errors. Carley Cleland had a solid all-around match with 11 kills, 3 aces, and 3 block assists and Hailey Dougherty led the defense with 27 digs.

Clarkson struggled on offense in the second match of the day, hitting just .071 and producing 47 total errors across the board. Reusch was a bright spot on offense, hitting .371 with 15 kills and just two errors on 35 swings to go along with six total blocks, including four solo efforts. Meghan Edmund recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 20 digs and Amanda Collins also reached double figures in two categories, scoring 43 assists and 14 digs. Kate Isaksen reached 40 digs yet again and in the process broke her own single-season record for digs set two years ago, pushing her total to 859 in 2018. Kendall Cheval also produced a career-best 34 digs and Grace Mayer tossed in 17 digs.

For Frostburg, Biamba Tshitenge scored 13 kills and Ashante Corey-Bey added 11 kills. Katie Onyundo ran the offense to the tune of 39 assists and also added 20 digs while Cori Smothers produced 35 digs.
