Knights Late Charge Comes Up Short at Nazareth

Rochester, NY – With two more points in the fourth quarter than in the first 30 minutes combined, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team made a ferocious comeback in the last period but was unable to finish things off in a 54-48 defeat against Nazareth College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 3-5 overall and will play D'Youville College on Sunday afternoon. Nazareth edged back above .500 with the win, improving to 5-4.

Clarkson scored just 23 points in the first 30 minutes, but fortunately for the Knights, Nazareth wasn't much better with only 30 through the first three quarters. Both teams found some offense in the fourth, and the Knights took the lead briefly in the final minutes, but didn't have enough to end on top.

In the first half, neither team mustered much in the way of offense as Clarkson shot only 8-for-35 with a 0-for-9 rate from beyond the arc and Nazareth was only 6-for-34 with one basket made from the 3-point line. Clarkson led briefly in the first period as Kati Gotch kept the Knights close with the first six points before Hannah Earl's lay up at the 3:13 mark gave Clarkson an 8-7 edge. Nazareth regained the lead before the quarter was out, but the offensive struggles for both teams continued in the first half as neither topped 20 points.

The Golden Flyers found a bit of offense at the midway point of the third quarter to push their lead to nine, but Clarkson still found it difficult to make shots. Molly Stewart finally got a layup to fall at the 1:35 mark, Clarkson's first basket of the quarter. Emma Buonanno hit free throws in the final seconds of the period to get Clarkson back within seven (30-23).

Both teams finally got the kinks out in the fourth, especially the Knights. Hannah Earl hit a 3-pointer at the 7:03 mark to get Clarkson back to within one (36-35). Nazareth kept a tenuous grip on its lead for most of the period, keeping Clarkson behind by at least a point for most of the quarter. It wasn't until Buonanno hit a shot with 1:38 remaining that the Knights took their first lead since the opening quarter, but that advantage was fleeting as Lizzie Straub hit a 3-pointer at the other end for the Flyers to put Nazareth back on top. Molly Stewart tied the game back up at 48-48 with a layup in the final minute, but Nazareth found enough in the way of free throws down the stretch to keep Clarkson from completing its comeback.

Hannah Earl recorded a double-double on 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Knights, while Kati Gotch almost got there as well with 10 points and nine boards. Buonanno also chipped in 10 points and six boards. For Nazareth, Rachel Benedict scored 16 points to go along with 18 rebounds and Isabella Gjonaj added a double-double of her own on 11 points and 12 rebounds.
