Slow Start Puts Knights on Short End Versus St. Lawrence, 54-45

Canton, NY – Scoring more points in the fourth quarter than the first three quarters combined, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team's furious late comeback came up short against St. Lawrence as the Golden Knights dropped a 54-45 decision to the Saints Tuesday night at Burkman Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights dropped to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the Liberty League while the Saints moved to 4-3 and 2-1. Clarkson closes out the first semester with a non-league game against Cazenovia on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams suffered through a sloppy first quarter as each team committed five turnovers in the first five minutes of the game. It was St. Lawrence that would shake out of its early struggles, scoring its first basket with 5:20 remaining in the quarter and finishing the quarter with a 5-for-10 performance with no turnovers. Things did not get much better in the second quarter, though Clarkson began to take care of the basketball better. Unfortunately, the Knights shooting woes continued as the team made just two shots in the second stretch of 10 minutes, finishing with 13 points in the first half.

Clarkson trailed in rebounds 24-10 at the break and committed one more turnover (12) than St. Lawrence (11).

In the third, St. Lawrence extended its advantage as the Knights could not find the range from the 3-point line. The Saints shot 8-for-14 in that period while Clarkson went just 1-for-13. However, in the fourth quarter, Molly Stewart broke the streak from long range, hitting the team's first 3-pointer at the 8:47 mark. Stewart hit another shot from beyond the arc just a moment later and the Knights did not commit a turnover for the remainder of the game. Trailing by a margin in the high teens for much of the period, Clarkson began to employ a press that forced the Saints into numerous turnovers, creating easy opportunities on the break. Although the Knights got within single digits on an Emily Zeyak layup on the final possession, the Green and Gold ran out of time to truly put any pressure on the Saints down the stretch.

Molly Stewart led the Knights with 15 points, shooting 5-for-13 from the field, and made six steals on defense. Emily Zeyak added 13 points, going 5-for-11 from the floor, while also producing three steals. For St. Lawrence, Katie Frederick had a double-double on 12 points and 19 rebounds while Meghan O'Connor also grabbed 10 boards.
