CU Baseball Preview - vs. Plattsburgh State (4/10)

After having road games cancelled throughout late March and early April, the Clarkson University Baseball team appears to have no issues with its home opener on Tuesday when the Golden Knights will host North Country rival Plattsburgh State at 4:00 pm at Jack Phillips Stadium.

Live Stats

The Series: Due to the fickle nature of the weather, the Knights and Cardinals have not met since 2013, and Clarkson has not hosted Plattsburgh since 2010. The Cardinals have won three straight in the series, but Clarkson is 4-1 at home against Plattsburgh since 2004, with a run differential in its favor of 52-20.

Key Stats for Clarkson (4-9 overall): Junior Brad Pearson is backing up the promise he showed as a freshman in 2016 when he was selected the Liberty League Rookie of the Year. The junior catcher/outfielder hit .563 over the weekend to raise his average to .431 overall, good enough for seventh in the Liberty League, while his .569 slugging percentage ranks eighth. Despite Clarkson having played fewer games than any other team in the Liberty League, Pearson is also tied for fifth in the league in runs batted in (13) and seventh in hits (22). Classmate Vincent Granuzzo is also hitting well, posting a .400/.436/.486 slash line in 10 games, while Will Coleman has returned to form after missing most of last year with a .326 batting average.

Key Stats for Plattsburgh State (6-13 overall): The Cardinals use speed to increase their run production, having swiped 44 bases in 55 tries (80.0%) in 19 games, which will make for an interesting matchup since Clarkson has allowed only six stolen bases and caught six would-be base stealers. Kentaro Mori has stolen nine bases so far and Stephen Bryant is 8-for-8 in stolen base attempts. Jon Craft leads the offense with a .321/.383/.358 slash line and Patrick Bryant is hitting .316, albeit with just a matching slugging percentage. Joe Deland leads the squad with 20 hits, including five doubles and two triples, to go along with six steals.
