CU Men's Soccer Preview - vs. Castleton/Sage (9/8-9)

With three straight wins to open the 2018 season, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team is off to its best beginning since 2009, and the Golden Knights will look to push that start to 5-0 after a pair of home games against Castleton and The Sage Colleges this weekend at Hantz Turf Field.

Live Stats/Live Video

The Series: Neither of these matchups are particularly compelling at this point since the first game in the series for each began in 2017. Clarkson defeated Castleton 2-0 in Vermont, scoring both goals just 31 seconds apart, while Sage eked out a 1-0 victory against the Knights thanks to a goal in the 64th minute despite being outshot 20-10.

Key Stats for Clarkson (3-0-0): The Golden Knights have scored 10 times in three games with a diverse offensive attack. Both Henry Gomez and Aidan Subra have scored at least one point in each of the three contests, with Subra locating Gomez twice. Both have accrued seven points in the early going (Subra 2-3-7, Gomez 3-1-7). Also producing on offense are Mack Walton (1-1-3), Drew Lewis (1-1-3) and Stephen Klimek (1-1-3). Though Clarkson owns a 51-31 edge in shots on its opponents, both Ian Roeloffs (12 saves) and Riley McDonald (8 saves) have stood tall against the opposition's scoring threats.

Key Stats for Castleton (1-1-0): The Spartans have been on both ends of lopsided games, dropping an 8-1 decision in the opener but recovering for a 6-0 win in their second game. Seraphin Iradukunda had a solid season in the second game, scoring eight points with three goals and two assists in Castleton's win. Colby Gay also recorded three points on a goal and an assist. Castleton's goalkeepers have struggled so far, making just two saves collectively, though Ryan McKay's performances have been solid (1.63 goals against average).

Key Stats for Sage (0-2-0): Hoping to build upon a 10-win season from a year ago, the Gators have been on the wrong side of two narrow losses so far, losing 1-0 to both Manhattanville and Plattsburgh State. Goalkeeper Mike Chriaravalloti has kept the Gators in the contests, making 10 saves with an .833 save percentage. He lifted Sage to the win over Clarkson last year, as well, making 12 saves in the Gators' 1-0 win, enduring a 16-shot barrage in the second half alone.
