Knights Drop 86-69 Decision Versus Vassar

Potsdam, NY – A sluggish start in the first quarter put the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team behind by double figures in the early going and the Golden Knights could never fully recover, dropping an 86-69 decision to Liberty League foe Vassar College on Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League, while the Brewers edged forward to 9-2 and 3-1. Clarkson will take on Bard College on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson shot just 3-for-18 in the opening quarter with one 3-point field goal made for seven points and trailed by 12 after the first break. In the second period, however, both teams began to bury shots from the perimeter, as Vassar was 4-for-5 from the 3-point line and Clarkson was one better with five makes on seven tries as both teams topped 20 points in the period. Clarkson was within 10 after a Molly Stewart 3-pointer with 1:45 to go, but Vassar converted three layups in the final 50 seconds to increase its advantage to 18 at intermission.

In the first few minutes of the third period, Clarkson again trimmed the deficit to 10 (45-35, 7:24 remaining), but that was as close as the Knights would get. The Brewers enjoyed numerous second chances in the game, grabbing 16 offensive rebounds with a 54-28 advantage on the glass. Those second chances helped throughout the contest, but four points on offensive rebounds came during a Vassar 13-4 run that put the game out of reach. Vassar maintained at least a 12-point advantage throughout the fourth quarter.

Junior Molly Stewart finished with 24 points on 9-for-16 shooting, including 6-for-11 from beyond the 3-point arc, giving her 13 3-point field goals in the last two games, the most by any Clarkson player in program history (the previous record was 10, accomplished by Devin Sorell twice in 2015-16 and Cara Manfredi once in 2014-15). Carly Assimon finished with 18 points, making four long distance shots of her own, and Hannah Earl chipped in 12 points while Emma Buonanno added 10 points. Clarkson shot 11-for-31 from beyond the 3-point arc, a figure that would have been considerably better except for desperation 3-pointers in the final minutes.

Vassar saw five players finish in double figures, led by Ryan DeOrio's 18 points. Jackie Cenan contributed a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds while Isa Peczuh and Sophie Nick each had 13 points. Dani Douglas also contributed 12 points. Vassar committed 23 turnovers in the game, but more than made up for that deficiency by shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor (30-for-61) with 10 3-point field goals.
