Knights Upended by Late Free Throws at Union, 47-45

Schenectady, NY – Emma Buonanno produced her second double-double of the season with game-highs in both points and rebounds, but the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team fell victim to late free throws as the Golden Knights dropped a 47-45 decision to Union College on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the Liberty League while Union moved to 2-3 and 1-0. Clarkson looks to regroup when the team takes on Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams started off slow offensively with neither converting for close to three minutes. Clarkson held a modest 6-4 lead at the 3:50 mark following a basket by Mariah Benavides, but the Golden Knights went cold for the rest of the quarter, missing four shots and turning the ball over three times to allow Union to end the first 10 minutes with a 10-6 lead. Those problems continued to start the second quarter as Clarkson coughed up the ball seven times and missed two shots in the first three-plus minutes as Union stretched its advantage to 18-6. However, Molly Stewart ended the drought with a 3-pointer to make it 18-9. Although Clarkson fell behind by 11 at the 4:24 mark, the Knights would end the period on an 8-2 lead as Emma Buonanno hit a jumper with seven seconds left in the half.

Clarkson outrebounded Union 26-15 in the first half, but its 19 turnovers gave the Dutchwomen more opportunities on offense. Buonanno scored 10 points and added in six rebounds, one assist and two steals in the first 20 minutes, while Union was led by Elly Vaughan's seven points, three boards, two blocks and three steals.

The start of the third quarter was much like the first as the two teams slowly put together points. Following free throws from the Dutchwomen at 4:29, Union led by nine. However, the Knights went on a 9-0 splurge thanks to two baskets from Elaina Porter, a jumper from Buonanno, and a 3-pointer from the top of the key from Benavides. Another 3-pointer by Molly Stewart had the Knights leading by one late in the third quarter, but a pair of free throws with four seconds to go allowed Union to hold a one-point advantage at the break.

The two teams went back and forth in the fourth quarter, with neither gaining more than a three-point lead. Union led by three early in the period, but Clarkson scored five straight to take the lead. A little later, a 10-foot jumper from Mariah Benavides gave Clarkson a 43-40 advantage, but that lead evaporated by the 3:51 mark. Molly Stewart hit a pair of free throws after getting fouled in the lane at the 2:30 mark to give the Knights a 45-43 advantage. However, a steal and a fast break basket by the Dutchwomen a minute later tied the game at 45-45.

Neither team could put together any kind of offense in the final 90 seconds, but Union was awarded free throws when Clarkson was whistled for a foul. Anna Metcalf made both of her free throws with just five seconds on the clock and Clarkson's last second scoring chance was unsuccessful as Union escaped with the win.

Emma Buonanno finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 3 steals for the Knights and Mariah Benavides closed with 10 points and four assists. For Union, Megan Lee led the team with 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting with five boards. Both Elly Vaughan and Anna Metcalf chipped in nine points, with Vaughan also adding in four blocks and three steals.
