RIT Outlasts Clarkson, 75-61

Rochester, NY - Sophomore Rachel Marion enjoyed a career-day with plenty of notches in numerous categories, but the effort was not enough for the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team as the Golden Knights dropped a 75-61 decision to RIT on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-16 overall and 4-12 in the Liberty League while RIT moved to 17-6 and 12-4 with its ninth straight win. Clarkson still has a chance at the Liberty League playoffs with a sweep of Skidmore and Rensselaer this weekend, but the Knights need additional help from those other two teams' opponents as well.

Despite shooting just 4-for-16 in the fourth quarter, RIT was able to improve its lead from 11 points to a game-ending 14 points as Clarkson committed eight turnovers in the final 10 minutes against the Tigers' one miscue.

RIT opened the contest with a 10-3 lead in the first two-plus minutes as Sabrina Wolfe hit a 3-pointer at the 7:48 mark to quickly get the Tigers into double digits. That basket proved to the be the last points for RIT for more than five minutes as Clarkson came back to take the lead at the 2:40 mark on an Emma Buonanno jumper (11-10). The two teams exchanged the lead several times in the final two minutes, but a three-point play from Wolfe with a layup and free throw gave the Tigers a 17-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Clarkson still was in the game midway through the second quarter when Raeanna Dunn hit a jumper at 5:37, putting the Knights within three (26-23), but RIT scored the next six points to push its advantage to nine when Brooke Stanley hit a shot at 3:23. Marion dropped in a 3-pointer at the 1:29 mark to put Clarkson back to within six at 1:29, but the Knights went scoreless for the remainder of the period.

The Tigers increased their lead to double digits for the first time at 8:48 in the third on a Tara Lynch jumper (40-30), but Clarkson responded with a 10-2 run, capped by another Rachel Marion 3-pointer at 4:46 mark, making the score 42-40 in favor of RIT. The two teams were separated by just two points with two and a half minutes to go in the third, but RIT ended the quarter on a 10-1 run, finished off again with a last second three-point play from Cori Okada with a layup and free throw.

RIT stretched its lead to 15 points twice in the early going of the fourth, but 3-pointers from Molly Stewart and Raeanna Dunn had Clarkson back to within eight with a little over four minutes to go, but that was as close as Clarkson would get. A 3-pointer from Kati Gotch with 1:08 left was the last gasp for the Knights, pulling Clarkson back to an 11-point margin, but the Tigers were able to hold off the Knights down the stretch.

Molly Stewart finished with 17 points, including three 3-pointers while Rachel Marion recorded a line of 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. Grad student Raeanna Dunn also tossed in 12 points, shooting 5-for-7 from the floor. For RIT, Sabrina Wolfe tossed in 24 points on 8-for-16 shooting and Tara Lynch nearly matched her with 21 points. Cori Okada contributed 14 points, 6 assists and 6 steals, and Alyssa Juergens produced 8 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. RIT won the battle of turnovers by forcing Clarkson into 27 in the contest while committing only 16 of  its own. RIT also recorded 12 offensive rebounds while the Knights had just six.
