Knights Split on Day One in Florida

Auburndale, FL – It was a tale of two offenses for the Clarkson University Baseball team as the Golden Knights scored 13 times in their first game but were shutout in game two as the Green and Gold split the first doubleheader in Florida against UMass-Dartmouth (13-0) and Hope College (11-0).

Originally scheduled for an off day Saturday, the Golden Knights have picked up Olivet for a nine-inning contest at the Chain O' Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, FL.

Versus UMass-Dartmouth, Clarkson scored six times in the first two innings and then added six more in the seventh and eighth innings in a 15-hit outburst. In the opening frame, Nate Burns scored on a bases loaded fielder's choice and Mike Tito drove home Brad Pearson for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the second, Burns drove in two with a double to left-center, Tommy Bianchi pushed another run across with a single to left, and then Bianchi came home on a wild pitch for a 6-0 advantage.

In the fourth, Clarkson picked up a run when Vincent Granuzzo led off with a walk and later came around on a throwing error. However, it was in the seventh and eighth innings that the Knights put the game away. Pearson drove home Mike Messier with a single, Nolan Duda plated one with a sacrifice fly, and Pearson came home on a Tito single to put Clarkson up 10-0. In the eighth, Burns drove in another run with a double, a Bianchi groundout scored another run, and pinch-hitter Mike Bonk singled home the final run.

Burns was 3-for-5 with four runs scored and three more driven in while Bianchi (2-for-6), Pearson (2-for-4), Tito (2-for-5), and Krick (3-for-5) all produced multi-hit games. Messier also was 1-for-3 with two walks, scoring three times in the win. Ryan Riley picked up the win by tossing five strong innings with four strikeouts and eight groundouts. Kyle Locklear and Ethan Kornbrek each hurled two scoreless innings to close out the win.

For everything that went right in game one for Clarkson, nothing went the Knights way in game two. Hope led by four after four innings of work from Mike Bubniak, in which the senior struck out five and allowed four earned runs. The Flying Dutch scored six in the bottom half of the fifth and tacked on one more run in the sixth. Clarkson earned three walks and reached base via error on two occasions, but Hope starter Sean Hoey struck out nine in 5.2 innings and combined with two other relievers to hold Clarkson without a hit.
