Sergeant Caps Off 16-12 Win Over Vassar with 100th Career Point

Potsdam, NY – Scoring three times in the last two minutes of the first half gave the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team a lead it would never relinquish as the Golden Knights claimed a 16-12 Liberty League victory over Vassar College on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights won their third straight game to improve to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the Liberty League, while the Brewers fell to 4-3 and 1-1. Clarkson is off until next weekend when the team hits the road to take on William Smith College and Ithaca College.

The Green and Gold found themselves in a 3-0 hole in the early going, but the team responded with three straight goals of its own to tie the game with less than nine minutes off the clock. The back and forth continued for the next 19 minutes, with neither team able to take more than a two goal lead and the teams still knotted up at 7-7 after consecutive goals from the Brewers' Tessa Waters and Melanie Silverman. However, Jaid Baytos found Marisa Clark at 1:49 to put the Knights up a goal and Sydney Roderick tallied with 44 seconds left. The biggest goal might have come at the very conclusion of the half when Natalie Farnett found the twice with just five seconds left in the half, putting Clarkson up 10-7.

Although each team scored less than three minutes into the second half, goals were hard to come by for a long stretch in the final period. Alessandra Fable converted at 27:01 and until she scored again at 16:15 there was no other offense to speak of in that run. Fable's second goal of the half pulled the Brewers within two, but Clarkson scored three straight to push the lead to 14-9, making it appear as if the Knights would cruise over the final minutes. That would not be the case, as the Brewers scored three times in just 55 seconds to get back into the contest. After winning the next draw, Vassar was in a position to pull within one, but an errant pass gave Clarkson the opening it would need. Freshman Sydney Roderick found sophomore Natalie Farnett in front at 2:25 for a score and a big momentum shift as the Knights were able to hold Vassar in check for the rest of the contest.

Clarkson won the battle of shots with a 37-26 edge (31-22 shots on goal), but Vassar outpaced Clarkson in groundballs (36-31) and draw controls (16-14), including a 10-2 edge in draws during the second half.

Roderick finished with a team-best four points on two goals and two assists while also scooping up five groundballs. Katie Sergeant scored three times, including an insurance goal in the final minute, to push her collegiate total to 100 career points. She also had four groundballs, three draws and two caused turnovers. Jaid Baytos added three points and seven draws and Abby Collins also recorded seven groundballs and three caused turnovers. Collins, Farnett, Clark, Mia Petrone and Emma Andrews each scored two points in the win. Samantha Gladd stopped eight shots in 52:10 and Carolynn Pechmann made two saves in just under eight minutes of work midway through the second half.

For Vassar, Caeli Porette was all over the field, earning 11 draws and nine groundballs while also causing five turnovers in addition to her three points of offense. Alessandra Fable ended with a game-high six points on four goals and two assists and Fiona McLeod added five points (2-3-5), four groundballs and three caused turnovers. Kelly Pushie also scored a goal and caused four turnovers. Jackie Molloy made 15 saves for the Brewers.
