Freshmen Produce at Plattsburgh in 7-2 Clarkson Win

Plattsburgh, NY – With most of the starters taking a break, the Clarkson University Baseball team's reserves showed what they could do, putting up six runs in the first two frames to gain a 7-2 non-league win over Plattsburgh State on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 16-12 on the season and are scheduled for a four-game set against Rensselaer this weekend at Jack Phillips Stadium. Plattsburgh State, playing its fifth game in four days, dropped to 11-18 on the campaign.

Head coach Jim Kane put six freshmen in the starting lineup against the Cardinals, and it took little time for the first-year collegians to show their stuff. Pete Ruzzo delivered a two-out, two-run double in the first and Gerard Mouton then drove in Ruzzo to put Clarkson up 3-0.

Plattsburgh responded with a run in the bottom of the first on a Stephen Lydon two-out single, but Clarkson tacked on three more in the top of the second. Ernesto Ruiz-Sierra and Michael McCormick drew back-to-back walks and Caleb Doyle followed with a single to load the bases. Vincent Granuzzo then singled home two to put Clarkson up 5-1 and Ruzzo delivered a sacrifice fly to score another, giving Clarkson a 6-1 edge.

The Cardinals scored in the bottom of the second on an RBI-single from Erik Matz and Clarkson pushed another run across in the fourth when Kyle Locklear scored on a throwing error following a fielder's choice, but no more runs would be tallied for the final five and a half innings.

Doyle finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and Granuzzo was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. Ruzzo ended up with just two official at bats, but drove in three. Alex Hill picked up the win for the Knights, tossing the first two innings. Ethan Kornbrek then threw three scoreless frames and was followed by shutout relief efforts from Jake Phillips, Nicholas Niles and Glenn Stever. Joe Mazzariello took the loss for the Cardinals, though Alec Fauvell did well in relief, allowing only a single unearned run with six strikeouts over the final 7.2 innings.
