Knights Lose Battle of Goose Eggs Against Ithaca,1-0

Ithaca, NY – Freshman Olivia Zoeller of the Clarkson University Softball team and Beth Fleming of Ithaca College locked up for one of the better pitchers' duels in recent memory in the Liberty League, but the Golden Knights came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision against the Bombers in the first round of the Liberty League Playoffs on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 25-14 overall and now await the loser of Rochester and Rensselaer and will play the first elimination game this evening as the tournament is getting condensed.

The two teams matched zeroes for nine straight frames before Ithaca scored in the bottom of the 10th inning. Gabby Laccona singled to center to plate pinch-runner Julia Loffredo.

Clarkson came close to scoring in the first inning. Raeanna Dunn doubled and then stole third before the second hitter had completed her at bat. Danielle Whitham followed with a walk and Michele Winn was hit by a pitch to load the bases with just one out. Beth Fleming, however, got out of the jam with two strikeouts for the Bombers.

Neither team threatened for several more frames, though each team sent a few shots close to the warning track. It wasn't until the top of the eighth that Clarkson again put a runner in scoring position. Kayla Robert singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and Rylee LeBourveau nearly sent her home, but her shot down the left field line was snagged. In the top of the ninth, Clarkson produced back-to-back hits, but a fielder's choice and a strikeout ended that scoring opportunity for the Knights.

In the tenth, Clarkson opened the inning with a single, but a pop up turned into a double play ending the chance. Ithaca's offense finally got going with a two-out double to left-center by Hannah Anderson, setting up Laccona's heroics.

Zoeller finished the game with just a single earned run and five hits with no walks over 9.2 innings, striking out six. Fleming struck out 14 hitters and gave up five hits and one walk in 10 innings of work.
