Two-Goal Effort From Coon Gives Knights 3-2 Win Over Oswego

Potsdam, NY – Junior Allison Coon and the Golden Knight offense scored three second half goals to lift the Clarkson University Women's Soccer to a 3-2 win Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights move to 4-1-1 on the season, including a perfect 4-0 at home, and will take on Utica College at 1:00 pm tomorrow at Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson got off to a slow start offensively and was unable to generate a shot opportunity until 11 minutes, 34 seconds had expired from the game clock. The Lakers took advantage, capitalizing with early pressure in the Clarkson defensive end. Just four minutes into the half, Clarkson goalkeeper Elyse Green sent a goal kick towards midfield, but the ball landed on the foot of Graisa Madden. Madden was able to thread a through ball ahead to Lynsey Roth, who received the pass and beat Green to put Oswego up 1-0. The Golden Knights got back on track after the sluggish beginning leading the way in corner kicks in the first half 4-2 and tying the Lakers in shots at 4-4.

Clarkson came out of the halftime break with early offensive pressure. Off of an Oswego turnover less than four minutes into the half, Camryn Careccia was able to slide the ball over to classmate Giulia Mahoney, who turned and fired a ball past Oswego's Sophie Portalatin to even up the contest at 1-1. Only 10 minutes later, Allison Coon picked off an errant Laker pass and turned upfield alongside Giulia Mahoney. The Oswego defenders collapsed on Coon and she dished the ball to Mahoney only to find it back on her foot for a one-timer to give Clarkson a 2-1 edge.

Coon was not done on the offensive end, scoring with less than four minutes remaining for what proved to be a key insurance goal. She gained control of the ball near midfield and eluded four Laker defenders on her way to the goal, beating Portalatin for a 3-1 Clarkson advantage. In desperation mode, the Lakers put together an impressive offensive push and were able to get a goal back on the Knights. Off the only Oswego corner kick of the second half, Gianna Perri was able to push the ball to Liz Myers, who beat Elyse Green from point blank range to bring the score to 3-2 with just 1:40 left in the game. The Golden Knights defense did a good job of playing keep away the rest of the way and didn't allow the Lakers to get a chance to tie the game.

Clarkson finished with a 14-8 advantage in shots (8-4 on goal) and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Elyse Green made two saves in the winning effort while Portalatin finished with five saves for the Lakers.
