Green Sets Record for Career Shutouts in 1-0 Win at Cortland

Cortland, NY – Seniors Elyse Green and Camryn Careccia made their impacts felt for the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team as the duo starred in a 1-0 win over Cortland State Saturday afternoon at Holloway Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-1-1 overall while Cortland fell to 3-4-0 on the season. Clarkson will be back in Liberty League action next weekend when the team hosts RIT at Hantz Turf Field.

Careccia provided all of the offense on Saturday, scoring her fourth goal of the season. After a failed clearing attempt by Cortland, Careccia intercepted the ball and sent a shot inside the left post from the right side of the box, putting Clarkson up 1-0 at the 16:09 mark.

The Golden Knights controlled much of the first-half play, outshooting Cortland, 9-2, and nearly made it a 2-0 game in the 31st minute when freshman Sarah Kohls sailed a shot over the crossbar with a one-time shot inside the box after a corner kick.

The Red Dragons generated the first three chances in the second half but could not break through. In the 49th minute, Janessa Factor put a shot over the crossbar from 15 yards out after a corner kick. In the 62nd minute, Sabrina Rodrigues beat her defender on the left side, but Green made a diving save at the left post. Seconds later, Green denied Jaden Galluzzo's breakaway bid with another sprawling save.

Careccia narrowly missed on a second goal of the game in the 81st minute, knocking a shot off the left post from the middle of the box. In the closing minutes, the Red Dragons pressured the Golden Knights and had two opportunities to knot the game. With just over a minute to play, Bryn Thompson just missed wide right from 25 yards, and Rodrigues had a one-touch shot deep in the box off a cross from the right from Galluzzo saved by Green with 23 seconds remaining.

Elyse Green finished with seven saves, six of which came in the second half, for her fourth shutout of the season and the 15th of her career, making her Clarkson's all-time leader in that category. It was Green's third straight shutout of Cortland, giving her 22 saves in a 2-0-1 stretch against the Red Dragons dating back to 2017. Danika Svendsen made nine stops for Cortland.

Clarkson finished with a 19-13 edge in shots, a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal, and a 13-4 lead in corner kick opportunities.
