Knights Earn 1-0 Win Over SUNY Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – A strong defensive effort limited the opposition to just two shots on goal and allowed a first half goal from freshman Sarah Kohls to stand up as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team remained unbeaten with a 1-0 victory over SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday night at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 3-0 on the season, the second time they have started off with three wins in three games since 2016, while Potsdam dropped to 1-2. Clarkson broke a three-game winless streak against the Bears with the victory.

Scoring opportunities were rare for Potsdam in the first half as the Bears recorded just three shots, their first coming almost midway through the period. Clarkson put a little more pressure on the Potsdam defense, testing goalkeeper Gabby Hobika with a few shots on the cage.

Clarkson did a good job of maintaining possession late in the first half and the result was the lone score of the game. After a corner kick, the Knights were able to keep the ball in the Potsdam defensive zone for a lengthy period of time. Attempted clears by the Bears only put the ball out of the penalty area and the Knights kept control. One cross by Danielle Martin from the left side of the goal eluded Hobika, allowing Allison Coon to pick up the loose ball on the right side near the goal line. Coon then tapped a short pass back in the middle to Kohls, who was able to finishing things off by hitting a shot midway up the net with a goalkeeper in the play at the 35:37 mark.

The second half was quiet as far as scoring chances went. Potsdam put two on the Clarkson frame, but Elyse Green was not challenged in making a save on either shot. Clarkson's pressure came more in the form of corner kick opportunities than shots on goal. The Knights took six corner kicks, though none was able to produce an insurance score.

Clarkson finished the game with a 14-6 edge in shots (6-2 shots on goal) and also held an 8-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Green made two saves for her second straight shutout while Hobika ended up with five saves.
