Late Free Throws Lift Knights Over Bard, 55-52

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY – A key offensive rebound late from Rachel Marion and solid defense in the final 10 seconds allowed the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to escape with a 55-52 win over Bard College in Liberty League action Friday night.

The Golden Knights evened their record at 5-5 overall and gained their first win in the Liberty League to improve to 1-3 in conference games. Bard dropped to 5-6 overall and to 0-4 in league contests. Clarkson will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when it faces Vassar College, while the Raptors will host St. Lawrence.

The Golden Knights opened up the game with an 8-0 run, thanks to early 3-pointers from Mariah Benavides and Hannah Earl. The Clarkson defense held the Raptors scoreless through the first four and a half minutes as Bard was 0-for-5 from the floor with a turnover in its first six possessions. After a free throw from Hannah Earl in the final minute, Clarkson was out by 12 points (18-6).

A 3-pointer from Earl to open the second quarter assured the Knights of a double-digit lead for the rest of the period as the Knights expanded the margin. Emma Buonanno consistently hit mid-range jumpers in the paint to help push the lead to as many as 21 points, but a mini-run by the Raptors at the end of the period, mostly from Christina Kiser, allowed Bard to pull back within 15 at the break.

Kiser was mostly held in check in the first half as Buonanno spent most of the time denying her the ball. She scored nine points, but only six of those came with Buonanno guarding her as the other three came on a fast break layup and ensuing free throw.

Bard rallied at the start of the third as Clarkson couldn't find its offensive rhythm. It took nearly six minutes for Clarkson to score a field goal as Hannah Earl finally converted to keep the Knights up by eight. The two teams exchanged baskets for the rest of the period and Bard closed to within six through 30 minutes.

Clarkson seemed to be on the receiving end of every whistle in the fourth quarter, as Bard was able to creep back into the game with eight made free throws, eventually tying the game at 48-48. Hannah Earl then took over, getting to the basket regularly to make sure the Raptors could never take the lead. Earl scored with just under two minutes to go and then tallied again with 1:05 remaining to put Clarkson up 52-50. Kiser converted at the other end, but Earl got to the line with 15 seconds left and made the first shot to help Clarkson regain the lead. Earl missed the second, but Rachel Marion snagged the offensive rebound. Forced to foul, Emma Buonanno was sent to the free throw line where she made her second attempt.

With 10 seconds remaining in the game, Bard had a chance to tie, but on a drive to the basket on the baseline, one of the Raptors stepped out of bounds, giving the Knights the ball back with five seconds left in the game. Rachel Marion made one free throw to force the Raptors into a desperation 3-pointer, which ended up short and wide to give Clarkson the win.

Buonanno finished with a double-double, notching 15 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three assists, while Earl produced a line of 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Benavides tossed in 11 points and Marion scored eight points and snagged seven boards. For Bard, Kiser finished with 21 points on 8-for-16 shooting and Jess Rylander added in 12 points on a 4-for-6 effort from the field.
