Clarkson Falls 67-53 to RIT

Potsdam, NY – Depth and constant pressure from RIT proved too much to overcome for the depleted Clarkson University Women's Basketball team, as the Tigers downed the Golden Knights 67-53 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 6-9 on the season and 2-7 in the Liberty League, while RIT edged back over .500 in league games at 5-4 and moved to 7-9 overall.

RIT's Sabrina Wolfe was hot from the perimeter, making five of the Tigers' six 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 22 points. Clarkson struggled from long-range in the second and third quarters, combining to go just 1-for-9 in that 20-minute stretch.

Clarkson got off to a strong start and was up 7-2 in the early going after a 3-pointer from Hannah Earl, but RIT responded with the next 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers from Sabrina Wolfe. The margin expanded to 10 on a layup by Sarah Henretta, making it 19-9, forcing Clarkson to take a second timeout. That break seemed to right things for the Golden Knights, as they knocked down two 3-pointers, one from Mariah Benavides and another from Hannah Earl, to cut the lead to four. RIT ended the quarter with the final two baskets to put the score at 25-18 through just 10 minutes.

The second quarter saw the offense comparatively muted as each team's shooting percentage dropped. It was more pronounced for the Green and Gold, as Clarkson shot just 22.2% in the period, allowing RIT to earn a double-digit advantage early on, something that the Tigers would not relinquish for the rest of the half. The lead got to as many as 17 for RIT, but a late basket and free throw from Earl reduced the gap to 13 at the break.

Earl had 13 first-half points for Clarkson to go along with three rebounds and three assists, while Sabrina Wolfe poured in 15 points in 15 minutes for RIT in the opening half.

The Knights were down by 13 after a 3-pointer from Mariah Benavides in the opening minutes of the third, but RIT went on a 12-4 run to end the quarter, getting to the basket for layups and short jumpers. In the fourth, the margin was pushed to as many as 23 on two occasions, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Hannah Earl in the waning moments allowed Clarkson to close the gap. A three-point play by Elaina Porter in the final minute allowed the Knight to reach back within 14, but that proved to be the final points for either team.

Earl finished with 17 points, five rebounds and four steals while Rachel Marion tossed in 15 points. Maddie Pratt snagged a team-best eight rebounds.

For RIT, Wolfe shot 8-for-13 for her 22 points, adding in six rebounds and four assists. Kaleesha Joseph also had 14 points and seven rebounds, but was the only other player in double figures for RIT.
