Only a handful of players are gone from last year's Liberty League playoff team, so the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team is looking for bigger things once the 2020 season begins next week against SUNY Canton.

As the sixth-seed in the conference tournament a year ago, Clarkson nearly upset Rensselaer on the road in the opening round game, falling 13-12 on a last-second goal. It was a bitter pill for the Knights to swallow after leading for most of the game, and the experience was one that should help a team that is loaded with upperclassmen in virtually every spot on the field.

The Returners: Every week of the 2020 season will likely see senior Conor Bartlett surpass someone on Clarkson's all-time scoring list. A two-time Liberty League All-Star, Bartlett already ranks 14th all-time in Clarkson's leaderboard with 142 points on 76 goals and 66 assists. He has an opportunity to perhaps become the program's 11th 100 goal scorer and, with a standout season, maybe the fifth player in program history to get to 100 career assists. Whether he gets to the latter threshold will likely be decided by classmate Pierce Currie, the team's leading goal scorer from a year ago. Currie found the net 35 times in just 13 games last year, ranking among the conference leaders in goals per game and among the team leaders in points (46) and groundballs (30). Two other scoring options come in the former of fellow seniors Evan Burgett and Tanner Cioffi. Burgett recorded 28 points on 20 goals and eight assists and Cioffi had 21 points thanks to 15 goals and six assists. First-year standouts Bryan Penney and Billy Bergan also produced on offense, combining for 29 goals and 39 total points a year ago.

In the midfield, junior Riley Holzman will be counted upon to get possession early and often, as he won a little over 50% of his draws last year and led the team with 80 groundballs. Clarkson has some solid depth in the midfield that provides some excellent two-way play, including seniors Derek White and Christian Freeman, junior Glen Pinkava, and sophomores Max Hoffer and Will Britton.

On the defensive side, Clarkson returns a significant portion of its veterans from a season ago, including USILA All-American Liam St. Croix. A three-time Liberty League All-Star, St. Croix was among the team leaders in groundballs (39) and caused turnovers (14) and should earn a fourth all-star nod come May. Joining him in the potential for all-league are fellow seniors Trevor Borchardt and Derek Beatty. Borchardt produced 24 groundballs and 17 caused turnovers a year ago, while Beatty ranked second on the team in groundballs (40) and was first in caused turnovers (18) in addition to scoring eight points on four goals and four assists. Junior Tyler King was one of the first players to sprint in off the bench and ranked among the team leaders in groundballs (30) and caused turnovers (12). Senior Andrew Schroeder also appeared in 14 games last year and will make a big contribution this season.

Between the posts, junior Kevin Dyckman is back as the team's starting goalkeeper. A year ago, Dyckman received all 16 starts and stopped 128 shots with a 10.90 goals against average.

Key Newcomers: Each year, head coach Bill Bergan and his assistants bring in large classes to augment the already talented group of veterans and this season proves no different. A number freshmen are poised to make immediate impacts for the Knights, including attackmen Sebastian Geiger and Thomas Fiebich, midfielders Ryan Butts, Adam Canfield and Tyler Hall, and defensemen Shane Boehmcke, Reid Edmands and Liam Tierney.
