Knights Cold in Fourth in Defeat at William Smith

Geneva, NY – For the second straight day, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team came up short in the fourth quarter, turning a tight game into a double-digit defeat as William Smith beat the Golden Knights 70-44 in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-13 overall and 3-11 in the Liberty League, while William Smith improved to 13-8 and 9-5. Clarkson closes out its road games next weekend when it plays at Ithaca College and Skidmore College.

Clarkson led midway through the third quarter, but the Knights were on the short end of an 11-0 run to close out the period and William Smith outscored Clarkson 24-6 in the fourth quarter.

The Knights were down by one with 2:40 remaining in the first quarter only to see Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou hit back-to-back 3-pointers and lead the Herons to a nine-point lead through the first period. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Stella Davis did the same for William Smith in the second quarter, turning a three-point game quickly into a nine-point advantage for the Herons, and Clarkson trailed by 10 at the break.

A strong start to the second half allowed Clarkson to gain the lead midway through the third quarter. Emma Buonanno hit back-to-back jumpers to put the Knights up 38-35 with 5:42 remaining. However, Clarkson went cold for the rest of the period and William Smith scored 11 straight to gain an eight-point lead through 30 minutes. That rough patch in the third continued into the fourth as Clarkson shot just 1-for-12 in the period. Down by 12 with 4:29 remaining after a pair of Hannah Earl free throws, Clarkson would not score again, allowing William Smith to pick up a 26-point win thanks to a late 14-0 run.

Emma Buonanno finished with 16 points and seven rebounds and Hannah Earl added 14 points, six boards and three steals for Clarkson. Stella Davis led William Smith with 23 points, shooting 8-for-10 from the field and 7-for-8 beyond the 3-point arc. Olivia Parisi had a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds, Lauren DeVaney nearly matched the effort with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou had 10 points, 14 rebounds and six assists.
