Second-Half Score Sends Clarkson to 2-1 Defeat at Union

Schenectady, NY – A quick goal in transition proved to be the game-winner on Saturday as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team fell to Union College 2-1 in Liberty League action.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 4-8-2 overall and 2-4-2 in conference games and Union moved to 6-7-2 and 3-3-1. Next week, Clarkson faces crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam in a midweek game and then closes out the regular season at Rensselaer on Saturday.

The deciding goal looked like more of an opportunity for Clarkson at first, but Union's transition worked quickly and put the Dutchwomen on top. The ball was in Union's defensive end as Clarkson looked to get a shot off from the top of the box, but the attempt was blocked and quickly cleared. The Knights picked up possession close to midfield, but Union's Sam Friedman made an aggressive play to create a turnover and ran up field with only one defender to beat. After getting past the last Clarkson defensive player, Friedman and Liz DiCecco had a two-on-one against Clarkson goalkeeper Molly DiCaprio, and Friedman sent a pass to DiCecco before DiCaprio could close down the angle and the Dutchwomen scored at 74:45.

Clarkson had scored early on with a nice give-and-go to start the play on the right sideline. Near midfield, Chloe Hodge had a throw-in and found Angelina Fahrenkrug, who quickly played the ball back to Hodge. Fahrenkrug then filled in space down the sideline and Hodge sent the ball back her way. With space about 15 yards out, Fahrenkrug sent a cross into the box, just missing a clearing attempt on a header by a Union defender, and her pass found Julia Cascone, who swiftly took advantage of her opportunity, scoring from about 10 yards out at 16:38.

Union would tie the game at 29:20, when Friedman lofted a shot from just a half-step inside the penalty area. DiCaprio appeared to make an initial save with a tip, but she couldn't quite get the ball over the bar and her second diving attempt to keep the ball out of the net came up just short.

Clarkson ended up with a 12-8 lead in shots overall, though the two teams were tied in shots on goal at five apiece. Clarkson also held a modest 6-4 advantage in corner kick chances. DiCaprio finished with three saves for the Knights while Abby Mitty made four saves for the Dutchwomen.
