Geneva, NY – Freshman goalkeeper Molly DiCaprio made eight saves for the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team, but the effort wasn't enough as the Golden Knights fell to sixth-ranked William Smith College, 3-0, in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 3-5-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the Liberty League, while the Herons remained unbeaten in league play at 5-0-0 and moved to 10-1-1 overall. It was William Smith's seventh straight shutout. Clarkson will close out its home portion of the schedule next weekend against Vassar College and Bard College before finishing out the regular season with four games on the road.

Clarkson employed a sort of shell for defense, trying to keep William Smith from getting in too close for solid scoring chances. For the most part, the tactic worked until late in the contest when the Herons scored twice in the final 25 minutes. William Smith would get on the board midway through the first half, but that was not a lapse in the Golden Knights' defense, but a foul where Sheila McQuillen was taken down in the penalty area, just a few feet in on the right side. Though it was McQuillen who was fouled, Julia Keogh took the penalty kick chance and converted, hitting a shot with her right foot just inside the right post at the 24:09 mark.

Clarkson's best chance of the half came late when Tonia Kousmanidis took a hard shot near the right post that was denied by Amanda Kesler in the 35th minute.

Molly DiCaprio continued to play well in goal for the Knights, but she had little chance of stopping William Smith's final two scores. In the 66th minute, the Herons stole a ball off a throw in and quickly reversed field with a pair of quick passes in the midfield. Eventually, the ball found the foot of McQuillen roughly 12 yards away on the left side of the penalty area, and McQuillen hit a hard shot into the top right corner to make it 2-0. The Herons added an insurance goal in the waning moments as a break from midfield saw McQuillen score at 84:49 with a quick tough off a cross from the opposite side by Amanda Adams.

William Smith finished with a 17-4 edge in shots and an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Herons also led in corner kick chances, 4-0. DiCaprio made eight saves for Clarkson and Kesler stopped three shots for William Smith.
