Down 4-0, many fans decided to beat the traffic and started filing out of Cheel. Well, did they miss one of the greatest comeback in the Golden Knights 100 year history.
Cornell took a 1-0 lead in the first period and extended the lead to 2-0 after two periods of play. There was a sense that Clarkson was playing better than what the scoreboard showed. In the third, a miscue behind the net and then another power play goal put the Big Red up 4-0, with 8:07 left to go in th game.
Then, at 14:43,
Chris Klack scored to get the Knights on the board. The fans that stayed could feel at least some respectability that the Knights were able to thwart the shutout. Lukas Kaeble scored at 17:07 and the buzz started to fill the building. When
Anthony Romano scored with the extra attacker, the impossible started to creep into the minds of those in Cheel.
After a scrum in the corner in which a Big Red player had fallen on the puck in the corner, a scrum lead to a 4 on 4 situation. With the extra attacker on and 4.7 left on the clock, then Knights won the face off and the shot squeaked under the Cornell goalie leaving
Zach Tsekos alone in the crease to bang home the rebound and tie the game.
The 3 on 3 OT saw the Knights get some early chances but with just over 2 minutes remaining
Noah Beck went off for tripping, creating a 4 on 3 advantage for Cornell. The Knights killed off the power play and the game went into the first shoot out at Cheel with fans.
Zach Tsekos and
Jack Jacome both scored in the first two rounds. The third round saw saves by both goalies, leading to
Alex Campbell scoring in round 4 and
Ethan Haider making the save to end the shootout and get the extra point for the Knights.
Clarkson out shot the Big Red 38 to 21.
Clarkson will head to Phoenix this week to face Arizona St for the final two games of the semester.
