Late Run From SLU Sends Knights to Defeat, 79-73

Potsdam, NY – Despite a significant advantage on the offensive glass and 10 made 3-pointers, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team dropped a 79-73 decision to St. Lawrence University Friday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-2 on the season while St. Lawrence improved to 1-1. The two teams will play one another again on Tuesday in Canton.

The Golden Knights raced out of the gates by scoring the first eight points in less than three minutes and held a 14-5 edge thanks to back-to-back layups by Elaina Porter with less than four minutes to go. However, the Saints knocked down the next nine points, including a banked in 3-pointer at the buzzer by Olivia Middleton. In the second quarter, the Saints proved their run at the end of the first period was no fluke, as neither team could push the margin to more than three points.

Molly Stewart scored eight points in 12 minutes of action and Hannah Earl delivered six points and six rebounds. Off the bench, Elaina Porter tossed in nine points, shooting 4-for-5 from the floor. St. Lawrence was led by 12 points from Abby Doin, as the freshman shot 5-for-9 from the field despite not starting.

The third quarter saw the Knights expand their lead by five points thanks to a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute from Carly Assimon and Molly Stewart, but Clarkson struggled on offense in the fourth quarter. St. Lawrence took advantage by getting to the free throw line, and going 9-for-11 from the stripe. Clarkson led by three after a make from Hannah Earl with just over four minutes to go, but the Saints scored nine unanswered, including a key 3-pointer from the win by Abby Doin. Down by eight in the final minute, Molly Stewart and Tess Maline hit two big 3-pointers to keep the game close, but a pair of free throws from Olivia Middleton iced the game for the Saints.

The Golden Knights snagged 31 offensive rebounds, but were able to score just 22 second-chance points off those opportunities. Stewart finished with 17 points for the Knights, including five 3-pointers, while Hannah Earl produced 13 points and 13 boards. Carly Assimon dropped in 14 points and also grabbed seven boards.

Olivia Middleton finished with 20 points on 7-for-13 shooting and also added six assists for the Saints. Abby Doin dropped in 15 points and Kristen Varin scored 12. Sierra Sanson was two points shy of a double-double with eight points and 14 rebounds.
