Stewart Hits 1000 Career Points in Knights Win Over SLU

Potsdam, NY – Graduate student Molly Stewart netted her 1000th career point late in the fourth quarter as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team gained a 59-48 victory over St. Lawrence University on Tuesday evening.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-3 on the season while St. Lawrence fell to 1-3. Clarkson will face Bryant & Stratton (Syracuse) at 4:00 pm on Thursday at Alumni Gymnasium.

Stewart entered the game needing 18 points to reach four figures for her career and scored a season-high 18 to become the eighth member of Clarkson's 1000-point club, accomplishing the feat in her 92nd career game.

Clarkson never trailed on Tuesday, but the opening minutes of the contest were slow going. Carly Assimon sparked the offense late in the first quarter, hitting a 3-pointer at the 3:49 mark and then finishing a layup with a free throw tacked on with 40 seconds left in the quarter. The second period saw the Knights expand the lead to as many as 12 on three separate occasions, but St. Lawrence rallied back late in the half, cutting the margin down to five when Kristen Varin finished a shot and added in a free throw (29-24).

At the start of the second half, the margin increased to as many as nine and then dropped to as low as five once again when Abby Doin hit a 3-pointer at the 5:26 mark, but Clarkson went on a run to end the quarter and pushed the gap back to 11 when Molly Stewart hit a layup with 19 seconds to go in the third. Hannah Earl opened things up in the fourth with a basket to give Clarkson its biggest lead to that point, but that advantage would increase to as many as 21 points, with the keys being a 3-pointer by Stewart and then a layup in the lane which notched her 1000th career point.

Stewart finished with a game-high 18 points, going 8-for-15 from the floor, while Hannah Earl added 12 points and Carly Assimon scored 10. Rachel Marion also contributed 10 rebounds and a pair of steals for the Knights. For St. Lawrence, Abby Doin scored 11 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the floor, while both Olivia Middleton and Kristen Varin scored nine for the Saints.
