Knights Fall Short at Vassar to Open Liberty League Play

Poughkeepsie, NY – Four straight goals midway through the second half turned a modest advantage into a healthier cushion as Vassar College downed the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team 15-10 in Liberty League action on Tuesday afternoon.

The game was the Golden Knights' first in league play this season, dropping them to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the Liberty League. Vassar moved to 2-1 both overall and in conference games. Clarkson will play William Smith College on the road on Friday and then take on the Herons at home on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson opened the game with two goals in the first two minutes on goals from Madelynn Barnum and Julia Nicotra, and the Knights maintained that two-goal advantage after Grace Hagberg scored while Clarkson was a player-up at the 22:58 mark to make it 3-1. However, Vassar responded with an 8-1 run in the next 16 minutes to take a 9-4 lead. Grace Hagberg halted the surge by the Brewers with her second goal of the game with 4:01 remaining, closing out the scoring for the first half.

The Green and Gold got two quick goals from Sydney Roderick to start the second half, pulling the Knights back to within two (9-7) with just a minute off the clock. Unfortunately, the Knights went quiet on offense for the next 15 minutes, giving Vassar a chance to regain a wider advantage with four straight goals. Hailey Millington scored back-to-back goals, the second coming with just under 10 minutes to go to pull Clarkson back within four, but that was as close as the Knights would get as the team could muster just one more goal down the stretch.

Clarkson was trailed by narrow margins in shots (33-28) and shots on goal (24-23), and the team led in groundballs (24-18) and forced 10 more turnovers than it committed. However, Vassar was able to control the play by earning 19 of the 27 draw controls in the game.

Roderick, Millington, Hagberg, and Barnum each scored a pair of goals, with Hagberg also contributing four groundballs and two draws and Barnum adding in two groundballs, two caused turnovers, and two draws. In her first game of 2021, grad student Katie Sergeant scored two points on a goal and an assist. Freshman Rylee Ganter scooped up five groundballs in the game.

For Vassar, Caeli Porette contributed six points on three goals and three assists while also adding in eight draw controls. Alessandra Fable scored four goals and tacked on an assist as well as five draws, and Kateri Sanservio scored four points on two goals and two assists. In the Vassar crease, Lauren Johns made 13 saves.
