Knights Fall in Five-Set Thriller at RIT

Rochester, NY – After a slow start in the first two sets, the Clarkson University Volleyball team rallied in its Liberty League opener against RIT to force a fifth set, but the Golden Knights came up just short in the sprint, falling in their first conference contest of 2021 on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 8-5 on the season and 0-1 in league games, while RIT improved to 11-2 and 1-0. Clarkson will host Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon and the Tigers will travel north to play St. Lawrence University.

RIT's offense ran clean in the first two sets, striking for 34 kills against just six errors in 66 attempts (.424), but the Knights stuck with the Tigers despite the high percentage offense. In the third set, Clarkson was able to slow RIT's run, allowing a comparatively low 13 kills with seven errors on 28 tries. Clarkson did trail by as many as seven points (19-12) late in the third set and it appeared as if the visitors might get swept, but the Green and Gold rallied taking advantages of some miscues by the Tigers and gaining timely aces from Emma Baxter to take the lead at 21-20. RIT would tie the set a point later, only to see Clarkson regain the advantage with consecutive kills from Gillian Kurtic and Kristin Werdine.

The fourth set again saw RIT take a big lead at the start (9-2), but Clarkson quickly got back into the game and eventually tied things up at 15-15 on kills from Megan McEwen, Allyson Treichel, and Werdine. The Knights took the lead on the next point, an attack error by the Tigers, and never trailed again in the set, eventually closing things out on a kill by setter Isabelle Crow.

As one would expect in a five-set match, the fifth game was a back-and-forth affair at the start, with the Tigers eventually edging out to an 8-4 lead. Again Clarkson would not quit, crawling back to within one four different occasions. Down by one, 14-13, following two kills from Kurtic, RIT finally closed things out with a kill by Cat Vento.

Kurtic and Werdine each had 15 kills to lead the Knights and Isabelle Crow contributed 43 assists and 11 digs. Emma Baxter also tossed in 17 digs and three aces. For RIT, Katie Hobler recovered from a slow start to earn 21 kills while also chipping in 11 digs and four total blocks. Taylor Higgins added 14 kills and 12 digs, while Calista Gasper and Cat Vento each had 13 kills. Kiana Walker recorded 24 digs, and Sydney Neff produced 59 assists.
