Last Second Shot Rims Out as Knights Fall to RPI, 57-55

Potsdam, NY – A desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer from Cassidy Dumont just rattled out as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball were denied by Rensselaer, 57-55, in Liberty League action Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

Clarkson fell to 2-10 on the season and 1-5 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers moved to 3-7 overall and 2-3. The Golden Knights will take on Ithaca College tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm.

The Golden Knights fell behind by five in the early going but took the lead near the midway point of the first quarter, eventually extending the advantage to four on a Mariah Benavides jumper. The Knights maintained that margin when Lauryn Withrow made a pair of free throws to close out the period. The Engineers rallied with the first seven points of the second quarter, with the small run capped off by a 3-pointer from Ashlyn O'Neil. Clarkson recovered and regained the lead with 30 seconds to go when Ruthie Nolan hit a 3-pointer, putting the Green and Gold up by two at the break.

The third quarter saw the teams tie on six occasions, but the Engineers began to assert themselves late in the period, scoring twice in the final minute to claim a four-point advantage. After a three-point play from Heather Converse, the Engineers were up by seven, only to see Clarkson come back thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from Cassidy Dumont near the five-minute mark of the quarter. However, the Engineers would not relinquish their lead despite a late 3-pointer from Nolan and another jumper in the final minute from the freshman. In the final seconds, Heather Converse missed both of her free throw attempts and the Knights advanced the ball into their own offensive end with just seven-tenths of a second remaining. Dumont got a clean look at the basket, but it was from 25 feet away and her attempt could not find the mark.

Ruthie Nolan scored 15 points, shooting 6-for-12 from the floor, while Elaina Porter added 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Cassidy Dumont also tossed in 11 points in just 23 minutes off the bench.

Ashlyn O'Neil led the Engineers with 19 points, shooting 9-for-12 from the field with five rebounds, including four on the offensive end. Heather Converse produced a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
