CU Volleyball Sweeps John Jay and Oneonta to Extend Match Win Streak to Five

Potsdam, NY – Seniors Emma Baxter and Isabelle Crow reached some individual milestones on Saturday for the Clarkson University Volleyball team, as the Golden Knights picked up a pair of sweeps against John Jay (25-15, 25-15, 25-19) and SUNY Oneonta (25-9, 25-18, 25-10) at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 8-7 overall, gaining their fourth and fifth wins, respectively. John Jay fell to 6-5 and Oneonta fell to 5-9.

Baxter and Crow each hit some round numbers for their careers, as Baxter became the 15th member of Clarkson's 1000-dig club and Crow became only the fifth player in program history to reach 2500 assists.

In the opening match of the day against John Jay, Clarkson rarely found itself behind. The Knights never trailed in the opening set, though the game was close in the early going at 7-6. Sara Galante and Allyson Treichel recorded kills to get things going for the Knights as the lead expanded to five. A bit later, Clarkson almost doubled-up the Bloodhounds with a run of kills, including two straight from Tess Sorel, forcing John Jay to take a timeout. Clarkson's run was momentarily halted after the break, but the Knights maintained at least a six-point advantage for the rest of the set and finished up by 10 points, hitting .361 (17-4-36) thanks to six kills from Werdine and four from Sorel.

Set two saw John Jay trail by three early, but take its first lead of the match four points later. The advantage was brief, however, as Clarkson regained its edge and kept the Bloodhounds down by a handful of points until the midway point of the game. Allyson Treichel's kill in the middle put Clarkson up by four (15-11), its widest lead in the game to that point. After exchanging points for a while, the Knights eventually pushed the margin to six (20-14) on a kill in the middle from Tess Sorel, forcing the Bloodhounds to call for a timeout. From there, the Knights sprinted to the end for a 10-point win and a 2-0 lead.  Sorel posted four more kills in the second set to push her match total to eight.

The third set was considerably closer as it took some time for the Knights to gain the lead for good. Near the midway point, the Knights edged out ahead of the Bloodhounds 13-10, only to see John Jay tie the set again three points later. From there, Allyson Treichel picked up some key points, scoring a solo block and three kills in Clarkson's final eight scores to close out the set and the match.

Clarkson finished the match hitting .333 (43-11-96) while John Jay hit at a rate of only .122 (29-18-90). Kristin Werdine struck for 12 kills and Tess Sorel added 11 kills, while Allyson Treichel notched eight kills and added three total blocks, including two solo. Isabelle Crow had 41 assists and Emma Baxter notched 16 digs. For John Jay, Faith Farer had nine kills, Meghan Smith had 19 assists and 10 digs, and Kristin Gretener produced 11 digs.

In the second match of the day, the Knights used some big runs in the first and third sets to quickly change the landscape of the contest. In the first, the Knights led by just three near the midway points, but ran off 11 straight to make the score 22-8, cruising from that point on. The second set was a closer affair, but four straight points close to the halfway point gave the Knights a six-point advantage which they would never relinquish. In the third, Clarkson trailed by one (5-4), but scored eight straight, with two points coming on Ashley Currier aces, and then the Knights tallied five of the next six to put the margin at 17-6, easily closing out the contest from there.

Kristin Werdine hit .367 with 14 kills and only three errors on 30 swings, and Allyson Treichel had a .500 attack percentage thanks to six kills and only one miscue on 10 attempts. Emma Baxter delivered 13 digs, Isabelle Crow had 31 assists, and Ashley Currier finished with five service aces. For Oneonta, Clara Culeton posted seven kills, Kayla Rende had 19 assists, and Annalisa Alicea led the defense with nine digs.
