Knights Sweep Fifth Liberty League Opponent with 3-0 Win Over Skidmore

Potsdam, NY – Thanks to 12 aces and a .255 hitting percentage overall, the Clarkson University Volleyball team remained unbeaten in Liberty League play, sweeping Skidmore College in three 25-18, 25-13, 25-14 on Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights ended a brief two-game skid with the win and moved to 12-9 overall and 7-0 in conference matches, while Skidmore fell to 7-13 and 2-5. Both teams play two matches on Saturday, as each will briefly exit league play to take on non-conference opponents Bates College and SUNY Potsdam.

Skidmore's best effort came from the first set, but it was unable to keep pace with the Golden Knights' offense. Clarkson had 19 kills and hit .295 in the opener as Sara Galante connected for six kills while Clarkson's middles combined to make just one error with double-digit kills. The Green and Gold never trailed in the opener, though Skidmore kept it close near the midway point of the game, tying the set twice at 14-14 and 15-15. However, after Galante struck for a kill to break the second tie, the game would never be in doubt again. Clarkson picked up four straight points and later won five of the final six points thanks to kills from Kristin Werdine, Tess Sorel, and Olivia Freer to close out the first game.

Skidmore had its first lead of the match early in the second game, but that was only for a brief moment in the first few points as the Thoroughbreds struggled on offense, hitting just four kills against five errors in set number two. Clarkson doubled up Skidmore (12-6) only to see the Thoroughbreds get back within four on two occasions. That was the last gasp for Skidmore, though, as Werdine spent seven straight points at the service line to turn the set into a double-digit margin at 20-9. Clarkson would close out the game with a 12-point lead as Isabelle Crow delivered double figures in in assists for the second straight game.

Crow began the third set at the service line as Clarkson kept Skidmore on its heels. The Knights scored the first nine points of what proved to be the final set, including two on aces. The Thoroughbreds briefly rallied to get back within three at 10-7 with a couple of strong service runs of their own, but Clarkson went on a 10-3 run late to gain another double-digit lead. Though Skidmore stayed alive on two match points with a kill and a block, a service error end the game and the match.

Galante finished with 11 kills to lead the team, and Kristin Werdine added 10 kills and 10 digs, but the best effort came from freshman Tess Sorel, who struck for nine kills with no errors on 18 swings. Crow had 35 assists and five aces, while Emma Baxter finished with a team-high 18 digs, including seven in the first set. Alexandra Bergantz also finished with 10 digs and a pair of aces.

For Skidmore, Grace Aronson had a team-high six kills while Carolyn Scott chipped in four kills. Tiffany Flores and Noa Berger split setting duties, combining for 15 assists, and Elizabeth Miller had 15 digs, with eight coming in the opening set.
